fatal error could not initialize video

I have a technical problem that I need your help with please.

Vanilla gamersgate download, even though I'd like to patch it up and install DV (which I already paid for) if I can get this resolved

Windows 7 Home Premium, SP3

HP Pavilion, AU850AA-ABA e9290f, Intel i7 processor

9 GB RAM

73 GB Free Hard Drive

NVidia Geforce GTX 260Video, 2GB I think

Realtek High Definition, driver version 6.0.1.5910

I looked through the stickies but couldn't find anything to help. Anyways. I downloaded a new copy of crusader kings from Gamersgate because I lost my cd. But after installing it, the game gives me the "fatal error could not initiate video" error as soon as the opening movie is over. This is the first time I've installed it on this computer, which along with my monitor were Christmas presents. The monitor's resolution is 1920x1080. I'm stumped, and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Try these things

- Rename your AVI-folder (in the main crusader kings folder) to something else (like AVIback f.e.)

- Go into the settings.txt file and make sure the resolution there matches what your video card/monitor can support. When in doubt set it to 1024 X 768 refresh 60.

Thanks for getting back to me. When I change the AVI folder's name I get the same error message, but now it comes even before the intro video.

What should the settings.txt file say? I tried messing with it a few days ago, and I'm not sure I left it the way it was supposed to be. When I reinstalled it most recently that file wasn't even in the main CK folder.

If you installed the game in Program Files I strongly recommend installing elsewhere, e.g. C:\games. Windows 7 and Vista have issues with Paradox games installed in Program Files.

I believe the vanilla CK (without DV) only supports 1024x768 so there might not be a settings file (although it's also used to toggle music on and off).

Might help to post the output of DXDIAG command (only through the 'sound devices' section).

If you're only using vanilla CK, it might be worth installing DV to see if it works. DV allows other resolutions than 1024x768 so it might work better.

Installed DV, still having the same problem. I uninstalled and redownloaded both from GamersGate, just for the heck of it.

I did notice again GamersGate has another file for regular CK called "registry fix for patches" that I thought I wouldn't need to worry about since I was going to install DV instead of patching. I tried it this time but it tells me I need to edit a "crusader_reg.reg" file that I can't even find in the folder. Might have nothing to do with it, but I wish I could find that file.

It's very strange to see this error on CK. Normally problems 'initializing video' only come up with EU3-engine games because of people having unsupported video chips or using too low a refresh rate or not being able to handle the default 1280x960 resolution. Unfortunately the older games don't do as much logging as EU3 that could otherwise be used to troubleshoot issues like this.

You might be experiencing this error because you are playing in windowed mode with 32-bit colour-quality.
Changing it to 16-bit might fix it.
