I got this error when I tried opening Prison Architect version "The_Kickstand_1.00 The_Jailhouse_1.01". I have already tried uninstalling the audio devices from device manager. My audio works fine for everything else except Prison Architect. It used to have audio before but I'm not sure what happened. There are also no mods installed (I checked the Introversion folder in appdata). Inside the zip file is a screen recording of me trying to recreate the problem.

EDIT: Paradox Launcher version is Kickstand 1.00 and Prison Architect version is Jailhouse 1.01. I also use the Epic Games version, not steam.

Thanks in advance.

Please attach here the game log C:\Users\{UserName}\AppData\Local\Introversion\Prison Architect\debug.txt

To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

AND DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Initialising SDL Audio:
FATAL ERROR : Failed to open audio output device: "No available audio device"
SoundSystem started : 44100Hz x 64 sound channels (including 8 music channels)
Your dxdiag shows 5 audio channels using 4 different audio drivers. The default output is currently:
Description: Speakers (Razer Kraken TE - Game)
Default Sound Playback: Yes
Default Voice Playback: No
Driver Name: USBAUDIO.sys
Date and Size: Tuesday, January-31-2023 08:00:00, 209920 bytes
That's the standard driver from MS and really should not be a problem. But can you test by switching to another channel, say the nVidia or RealTek ones?

So what you're saying is change the default audio device to the nVidia or the RealTek one and load Prison Architect to see if the problem is fixed?

Update: I changed the default audio device to nVidia Broadcast and I still get the "No available audio device" error. However, I could still hear audio from sources like YouTube and Spotify.

I also tried using the Realtek Digital Output as my default audio device and still get the "No available audio device" error. The difference is, I couldn't hear any audio from YouTube or Spotify.

If it helps, I have attached a screenshot of the home page and the Paradox launcher of Prison Architect. For some reason, it says the version date is Feb 24, 2023.

The version showing in the launcher page is wrong, in mine it says the Kickstand 1.02. Not sure what to make of that!

But yes, that home page is way out of date for me too, looks like they are not updating it any more.

Please try this:

- uninstall PA from Steam
- unsubscribe from all mods in this game's Steam Workshop

Delete the following folders if still present:

- Steam/SteamApps/common/PA
- C:/users/<UserName>/AppData/Local/Introversion/Prison Architect/
(keep any valued save games, of course)
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

Now install PA again and see how that goes please!

Im using the Epic Games version so I'll just uninstall and reinstall plus deleting the AppData folder and the installation folder.

Update: Paradox Launcher still says "The_Kickstand_1.00"; I still get the "No available audio device" error.

That must be a bug in the Epic launcher or game I guess. I'll report that.

SoundSystem started : 44100Hz x 64 sound channels (including 8 music channels)
In the Sound system settings in Windows for your active audio output device, properties, supported formats - what sample rates do you see there? Is 44.1 hz ticked?

And in the Advanced tab there, what is the default format?

Hello, sorry for the really late reply. I currently don't have my PC with me, I'll update you as soon as possible when it's with me again.

Thank you.

Update: I checked and I set the Hz to 24 bit, 96000 Hz (Studio Quality)

This is the screenshot of the default and active audio device. Spatial sound is turned off and the Levels are at 100. If it helps, my headset is Razer Kraken Tournament Edition. The game is not detected on the Razer software (where I can change to input to Stereo, Surround Sound, or THX Game Mode)

In Prison Architect, I tried all the Hz levels and it still has no audio. It is currently at 44.1 kHz. I still get the error when I set it to 44.1, 11.025, and 22.05 kHz.

I am sorry then, I cannot see what is doing this to you and what can be done about it! I'd speculate a Windows reinstall would fix it, but I know that's a lot to contemplate just for this!

What if you make a new Windows user on this machine and log into it with that? Any different?

I don't think I'll do a reinstall because of how annoying it would be to redownload and install everything.

I'll try making a new local user and see if it fixes the problem. If it doesn't, I'll probably just end it here.

Thank you so much for helping me.
