Prologue: The Founding of a Duchy

Map of the Duchy of Sardinia in Year of 1071
1071map.jpg

In the year of 1071, the political situation of Sardinia and Corsica have radically changed from what it once was five years ago. In many respects, it is hard to believe that a simple Judge that controlled southern half of the island within five year managed to establish his rule not only rest of Sardinia but on Corsica as well.

Sardinian Conflict (1067)

climbtower.jpg

Upon the marriage between Torcotore and his beloved Felicita Turati at the dawn of the year 1067, he realised that he could not be able to maintain his position among all the dangerous rivals. After careful consideration, he dispatched a letter pledging his loyalty to Duke of Apulia, knowing that it will cost him deeply. And yet an act of simple pledging can lead to unexpected consequences.

As often in his youth, Torcotore proved that he is courageous by climbing the highest tower in his land. After one of these episode, he proudly proclaimed that he will be the one that control all of Sardinia.

Realising that his people actually expected him to fulfil his boast, Torcotore struggled with his feelings as the letter from Duke Robert 'Guiscard' of Apulia arrived by ship, accepting his pledge. With new found support, he declared war upon Mariano Torchitorio, the Judge of Arborea on the same day. On receiving the letter from Torcotore insulting him in all manners of way and demanding that Mariano will hand over the lands or else! Mariano and his men quickly went south from their stronghold to ensure Torcotore will pay for his insulting letter.

Torcotore sent a message quickly to his new liege-lord asking for aid to defend his small land from his enemies. As Mariano Torchitorio laid siege on Torcotore's fort, an army led by Duke Robert himself left the ports heading for the island of Sardinia.

By May, the ships of Duke Robert finally arrived and lift the sieges. As the Duke Robert was welcomed by his vassal, the Apulian force quickly chased the retreating force, obliterated it and laid siege to Arborea itself. And by autumn of the same year, the province have fallen to Apulian men. After ensuring that the Torcotore's rule over the island is secure, Duke Robert and his men departed from Sardinia, causing sighs of relief from Torcotore's court. This concludes the Sardinian Conflict.

The Census of 1067

greatc1067.jpg

After consolidating his lands, Torcotore declared that there will be a census covering the entire island. After a month of painfully precise recordings, it was a surprise for the new ruler that there was a small chest of treasure found. After a moment of decision, he declared to the world and sending his liege lord most of the treasure, declared himself as Duke of Sardinia in new year of 1068. The first man to unify the island since the fall of Roman Empire.

However, among all the acceptances, there was a lone voice of protest. The Count of Corsica refused to accept this as matter of course and declared war on the newly established Duchy of Sardinia.

Corsican-Sardinian War (1068-1070)

seatransport.jpg

Unlike the previous conflict, this war was longer as it requires transporting men on ship to reach each other. The only blessing Sardinia did get is the fact Republic of Genoa refused to support Corsica in her war against Sardinia. Although the island of Sardinia is still recovering from their conflict a year before, they managed to find enough men to put together a force to attack the island of Corsica which departed from the island. The interesting sideshow of this war is the Sardinian fleet stumbled onto a wandering Saracen pirate fleet. Torcotore boarded their flagship with overwhelming confidence with his bodyguards and sunk it. Most of the Saracen fleets was smashed to smithereens and as they was in the hurry, they did not loot the ships as well. A fact that everyone in Torcotore's force regret.

They finally landed at Corsica by December and among the cold weather, laid siege upon the capital. Yet, news arrived from their homeland that Corsicans landed in Sardinia and laid siege upon it capital. It was truly stalemate as they attempted to finish their siege first. Luckily, Sardinian force is larger and eventually, by next May, captured the island of Corsica. Realising that he has lost, the Count of Corsica surrendered himself and his lands annexed to the greater Duchy of Sardinia. The stability of the new Duchy is now guaranteed

A Fateful Star

omens.png

Despite the success of Torcotore on consolidating his new realm, Duchy of Sardinia, he was very stressed for lack of heirs with his wife. To ensure the safe passage of his realm, there must be a heir to inherit the new realm. A dynasty to rule all Sardinia and Corsica. For all their efforts, it seems Torcotore and Felicita may not have a child after all. Yet on the 25th December 1070. a great shooting star streaked over the splendid night-sky. Torcotore accepted it as good omen, a sign of hope for his marriage and realm. On the next day, Felicita happily announced that she is expecting a child.

Looks good. Subscribed. :)

Interesting, will follow, though I have one question: Why do you call the Counts that make up the Duchy of Sardinia "Judge"? Is that the actual title of the ruler of those places at that time, or something else?

Ah, Sardinia. :) My first AAR was a CK one playing Sardinia, though I was playing as giudice Mariano, not Torcotore - here's hoping your AAR fares better than mine did! I'll be following to the best of my ability.

And to answer SplendidTuesday's question, yes, the rulers of the island were referred to as Judges, as their position derived from the Byzantine title judex provinciae.

New AAR from Sapphire, I shall follow!

Chapter One: The Star Council

The Star Council was established by the first Duke of Sardinia to advise him on grave matters concerning the Duchy. The members of the Council in the year of 1071 is as follows:

Torcotore I of Cagliari
Duke of Sardinia, Count of Arborea, Cagliari, and Corsica

Born in 1042, he led small role of the Judge until 1067 when he tricked Duke Robert 'Guiscard' de Hautville into removing the northern threat to his position. Once his rule over the island of Sardinia is solid, he declared himself as Duke of Sardinia, granting himself freedom from his liege lord. Over the course of two years, he fought a war with County of Corsica, defeating the island and annexed the island of Corsica as part of his own Duchy.

Felicita Turati
Duchess of Sardinia, Spy Master

Born in 1049, a childhood friend of Torcotore, she often get into arguments with Torcotore over the theology and nature of God. The arguments eventually turned to passion and it was not long before Torcotore asked for her hand in marriage. She remained a close advisor and currently serving the role of Spy Master.

lidiaboccanegrac.png

Lidia Boccanegra
Chancellor

Born in 1044, a childhood friend of Torcotore and equal in academic abilities to him. It was precisely of this that she was made Chancellor. Despite her challenges to the religious beliefs, she kept it within a close circle of her peers of the Council, as to not ruffle the feathers of the clergy.

brunildegonzagas.png

Brunilde Gonzaga
Steward

Born in 1048, a daughter of a merchant family in Corsica. She came recommended by her childhood friend, Felicita. And although she does not excel at governance or mercantile pursuits, she are able enough to manage effectively.

liviotizzonem.png

Livio Tizzone
Marshal

Born in 1033 and an Italian outsider. Shortly after Sardinian Conflict, a valorous but reckless tactician left the force of Duke Robert of Apulia as they departed from the island and offered his service to Torcotore. As Torcotore does not have any Marshal, he gladly granted Livio a place in his Council as Marshal. He played important role in the Corsican-Sardinian War and well-rewarded for such deeds.

ciroparentuellidb.png

Ciro Parentucelli
Primate of Corsica and Sardinia

Born in 1040 and an Italian outsider. On hearing that there is now a single realm controlling the entire island of Sardinia, the Pope Anselmo despatched Ciro Parentucelli to replace the Archbishop James as to reproaches him for wearing a beard. Ciro was also given the title of Primate of Corsica and Sardinia on the conquest of Corsica.

Clash of Order and Chaos

thievesguild.png

Despite the development of the new Star Council, there is something dark spreading from the newest conquest, Corsica. A Corsican criminal organisation called “Chaos Guild” was formed to oppose the newly founded state, Duchy of Sardinia. Within the year, they spread over to Sardinia by establishing themselves in Cagliari and gradually into Arborea. The current justice system could not stand up against this continuously assaults by criminals united by common cause and fear. Indeed, it was founded out that many guards are in collusion with Chaos Guild. So in the end, Torcotore and the Star Council begun to change the entire system of how order and justice worked in the Duchy.

Once the Duchy recovered from it war debts, accumulated during the Conflicts, it was planned that there will be three Courts of Justice, one for Cagliari, another for Arborea and last in Corsica. Each judge will be chosen personally by the Star Council and approved by the Duke. Eventually, backed with even stronger force, Chaos Guild will be obliterated and law shall be restored to it proper supremacy. It took the Duke and his new enforcers of Justice twelve years...

New Stars of Cagliari

omens.png

On the lighter note, a child was born... it is a girl named Dora, a disastrous new for Torcotore who was heard muttering that the whole marriage is a farce and there is no point of keeping her as his wife... until his wife, announced that she is pregnant and gave birth to the heir... restoring her into good book of her husband, he is named Ettore. Torcotore was delighted with Ettore, the Duchy have finally have a heir and will soon be the next Duke once Torcotore depart for heaven.

Nevertheless, it seems that Ettore will not have a brother after all as Annibale passed away after a year of his existence. But he does have lot of younger sisters as Lodovica was born in 1077, Tiziana in 1081, Felicita in 1084 and lastly Adelasia in 1085.

As for the Known World

falloflivornoandplombin.png

The years after the Founding was surprising... Ten year old King Yugerten ibn Ziri of Zirid went to war with Republic of Pisa and seized the provinces of Plombino and Livorno. For first time ever, there is now Muslim presence on the mainland Italy... and yet the Pope Dietmar did however declare a great crusade, to recover these lands of Jerusalem. Clearly, retaking the city of Jerusalem is more important than kicking the heathens off the lands of Italy. The Muslim realms in Spain seems to be doing well as they destroyed two Kingdom of Leon and Aragon, leaving only Kingdom of Navarra and Kingdom of Castille opposing the mighty forces. The realm which is not doing well is Kingdom of Germany, Italy and Burgundy. The three Kingdoms collapsed as the King Heinrich von Franken invaded the land of Italy repeatedly only to see his vassals rebelling and leaving him and his family all alone in Urbino. He may have no vassals but he is still recognised as King of Germany, Burgundy and Italy!

And lastly...

The Star Council by 1089 got three new members, replacing Spy Master Felicita Turati, Chancellor Lidia Boccanegra and Marshal Livio Tizzone.

ettorecagliariasmarshal.png

Ettore of Cagliari
Marshal

Born in 1073, he grew up to be energetic but cruel man. He was educated in the military force under the guidance of Marshal Livio Tizzone. On reaching the age of sixteen, he replaced the Marshal Livio Tizzone as new marshal. Even though he did not finish his martial education under eyes of his mentor. And more importantly, he need to find a wife to sire heirs. He was also heard muttering about how they should kick the heathen presences off the mainland of Italy.

doracagliariaschancello.png

Dora of Cagliari
Chancellor

Born in 1071, she grew up to be selfish, proud and stubborn women who love intrigue and gossip in the court. Despite age gap between Dora and ex-Marshal Livio, they got married. Eventually she became pregnant. Her skills and a daughter of the Duke meant she was able to take over the position of Chancellor.

vincentellotorellism.png

Vincentello Torelli
Spy Master

Born in 1046 and an Italian outsider. Pope Dietmar sent him to help the Duchy in 1085. As Felicita Turati grew tired of her duties, Vincentello Torelli was founded to be most suitably talented to take on the task of Spy Master of the Duchy. Rumoured to be lover of the Duchess.

@JDMS Thanks :)

@SplendidTuesday Morsky is right. The local leaders was called Judges except I did not know that what was the original was.

@Morrell8 Indeed, I am trying to figure out the direction of the Duchy...

@Morsky Thanks :) Also for answering SplendidTuesday's question.

@Auray Been a while since I did a proper AAR, ahh the Rise of Merchant Kingdom... Shame I never finish it :(

Nice AAR. Good to see the Pope's got his priorities straight, what with the crusade to Jerusalem when there are muslims right next door! Livorno and Piombino would be nice provinces for you to take, but the Zirids wouldn't give them up without a fight.

Does my eyes deceit me or is the HRE's capital in the middle of Italy?
