I created some ships for my federation, but by oversight I gave them wormhole engines instead of warp engines. So I corrected my blueprints and started upgrading the ships.
Turns out they upgrade to the wrong type and lose their federation status.

While there are still the five stars in the menu on the left, they disappear on the right and the brackets (Federation Fleet) are no longer there.
