I'm currently working on a mod to recreate the roman principate but I'm stumped on how to transition from a feudal society to an imperial one. In terms of technicality there are no issues, the issue lies in how to make it more realistic than "emperor has seized all lands, created a senate and land/positions will be handed out"
I have a system for elections, appointments, legions, the senate, consuls, cursus honorum, social standing. I could basically have a roughly modelled version of the roman republic/principate dropped in the game with only a little work left to do.
I'm thinking the first step is to make the provinces(kingdom titles) a version of feudal elective between the de-jure vassals of the title, implementing gavelkind for all duchy feudal titles
Maybe seize land only outside of the capital duchy as a midway step?
So, what is a practical and realistic way of transitioning?
I'm happy to retain feudal dukes (and lower) so long as the provinces' capital is imperial
