First, this may be a dumb question but how do I merge/combine damaged units. Also in one battle I fought at a castle and it took forever to break down a gate and most of my army was lost to repeated lightning strikes. Is there a strategy to these battles?

You can't merge your damaged units - we decided to exclude this as it is a lot cheaper to fill up the ranks now in King Arthur II than to hire new units - who will have basic stats by the way.
We didn't want players to end up in the middle of the campaign with only a few experienced units and basic units as the rest because of merging - you need your well-trained troops to take down the enemy.

Regarding the stronghold battles - indeed it is now a lot bigger challenge to capture a stronghold - with multi-level walls and locations that grant powerful global bonuses, the defender of the castle starts with a huge advantage - well, I think that is the way it should be. I have already seen sooo many games where defending a stronghold didn't provide enough bonuses for the defending party.

You can use your arcane abilities though in these battles. Which class do you play with Sulla - Warlord, Sage or Champion? Anyway you have the Wreath and its spells and Scarlet Mist is pretty effective and has a relatively wide casting range. It's also a good tactic to boost your Magic Shield if you want to avoid harsh damages - collect artifacts that increase your shield basicly or every 30 minutes by 1 etc. Some unit skills boost the shield as well or decrease the enemy's shield (for example the Sulla Legionaries/Praetorians can choose the "Reinforce Magic Shield" or the "Shield Disruption" skill after they have reached level 5 - first one is an active skill, meaning you have to activate it in battle, the second is a passive skill that has it's effect always on).

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for your help. I will try boosting the magic shield to see if it can hold until i can get past the gate. Thanks for the magic shield mechanic, but I am still trying to determine how to use it effectively. Also I chose the warlord. If there are any skills that would help getting past the gate, that would be very helpful.

I am not sure how I fell about the inability to merge units. I may have to play a bit more to get used to it. I just don't like entering a battle with a recently and heavily damaged unit that I need to keep on the sidelines until I can replenish it's numbers.

If you increase Sentinel relationship you can get the arcane training that allows a hero to be trained to be Immune to Lightning. You can use that hero to bust open the gate. Though I don't remember a city siege when I played the prologue. One of the heroes you recruit starts with Immune to Lightning IIRC.
