First time posting here and didn't see any thread with my problem so here I go.
I bought EU: Rome around when it first came out and it ran fine, but I recently installed Vae Victis via Impulse and now I can't play it. It starts up, but when it hits "Initializing Maplogic" the game quits and error with the window name "file exception" pops up with an error saying "exception in: .\discfile.cpp, line: 425 Description: could not open file"
Any help with this? Thanks

Please register VV here, thanks.

If you don't have the game from Steam, most likely VV installed in the wrong place, it should have overwritten Rome. Best approach is a full clean reinstall outside the system path.

First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall the game, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Reinstall Rome - choose a new directory like c:\games\rome\ instead of the suggested path. Then install VV, and make 100% sure you point it to the same path the game installed into (eg c:\games\rome or whatever you used above). Download the 2.32c patch, and run it to install it; again make 100% sure you point it to that same new directory above so that for instance the new rome.exe overwites the old one, the new romegame.exe overwrites the old one, and so on. Once done right-click on the game's desktop icon and set it to run as administrator, and to disable desktop composition.

I have done that 3 times and still the same error pops up. I uninstall the game, delete the files, reinstall it in a different folder, install VV via Impulse to that folder, update the patch, and still the error occurs. Is there some other way of installing it from Impulse? Do I need to update the game different then using the check for updates button at start up? I'm at a complete loss.

I have no idea about Impulse's install process, sorry. But the key point is whether VV ends up overwriting Rome or elsewhere. Do you end up with one or more romegame.exe files on your disks? If more than one, something is going wrong in the install.

When you install just Rome, does it work OK? If so, then install just VV over it; does it then work OK? If so then install 2.32, again try it. At what point in that process does it go wrong?

It is overwriting it. In order to install VV from Impulse, romegame.exe must be detected in the folder chosen; otherwise installation will not start. So I only have one romegame.exe. Also romegame.exe is removed when I uninstall VV. As such I am forced to reinstall Rome; once just Rome is reinstalled, the game game works fine. Only after I install VV does the error occur. Impluse listed the version that's being installed as 2.32c, so I don't know if that's a factor or not. The problem is not in the base game, so I believe the problem lies with VV. I wonder if the download itself is defective or something.

Yes, I think you're right. In fact I have some vague memory on Impulse distributing 2.2 under the title 2.32, or 2.1 under 2.2 - something like that.
Impluse listed the version that's being installed as 2.32c, so I don't know if that's a factor or not.
So they don't install VV then 2.32? I wonder if they are just applying the 2.32 patch and not the underlying VV game, that would explain everything.

Look in your Rome /logs/ directory for a file setup.log . Open it in notepad and search for Checksum, what does that line say?

There is no line with "checksum" in the setup.log. F3 turns up nothing. When I press "check for updates' in the startup screen it says that the latest patch has been installed. There is something in the error.log, but I don't know if it's of any relevance.

Really? That's not good, it should be there. How large is that file? Mine is 303kb.

The more I look at this the more sure I am that your download from Impulse is bad. Do you have access to another machine? If so try installing on that, if you get the same issue it pretty much confirms that Impulse's own copy is bad, and you'll need to log a ticket with them.

That's all normal and nothing to do with your problem.
