i recently underwent realm duress and spent ages getting rid of every vassal, friend, character etc that had the rebellious trait.i then went through about 10 years of no rebellious trait in my realm then a devotedly loyal duke got the trait.

the reason i did all this was that it was my understanding that the first rebellious trait needed a loyalty of about 40 to appear.if that is correct then how can a devotedly loyal vassal(100% loyalty)get the trait? can anyone clarify the loyalty level needed for the FIRST rebellious trait to appear?

There is more then one event that can give a character the rebellious trait. f.e. he can have a different culture then your ruler or he can be a friend of one of your rivals.

I both love and hate when these things happen to me as Byzantium ... love it because Byzantium really did tear itself apart from the inside whilst the islamic forces ate away at the border ... hate it because when I'm playing I never really want to have to deal with such problems.

so im always gonna have rebellious vassels!! darn,a lot of money wasted keeping loyalty high!

Not necessarily ... it varies from game to game and depending upon your laws. All legal variables aside I've had very different Byzantine games ... from as bad as having my vassals dispossess me before I had any family to grant titles and having an empire that stretched from Venice down to the Sinai.

Makes for some interesting gameplay and replayability.

Well, DV made more easy to handle this kind of situations: if a rebellious vassal declares indepence you can attack him, take all his provinces and then force him to join your realm again. (It also grants you lots of prestige)

In Ck you were obbliged to force annex rebellious vassals increasing dramatically your BB.

After all rebels are beaten it's quite easy to get the event that removes realm duress
