I just got Hearts of Iron 2, but have been unable to play it as after the opening movie the screen goes and I get a "Out of Range 60 to 75 hz" message. I get this same message if my computer is off while the moniter is still on. The music plays fine, but any key/mouse input does nothing.

If I press the space bar during the opening credits the screen freezes, and I have to endtask.

I'm running XP Home with 512 RAM and 160 GB.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

That should fix you up, start with Number 1 and 2 for you.

I tried all of those, but it didn't fix anything. Could it be a problem with my monitor? I didn't get a new one with this computer, it's an old CTX 15" one. Would directX9 affect that? I don't have any problems graphic-wise with anything else on my machine.

Keep that stuff done, like the folder renaming.
Really thought that AVI rename would help you out.

Any way lets take a look at your system. I assume you get that message when you are getting no signal from your computer, so it must be a video problem.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Do you know the model number of the monitor? What resolution do you run Windows at?

MEC said:
Actually that might be it. After I posted I tried to set the resolution to 1024 x 768 and got the same "Out of Range" error. Does HOI2 not support 800 x 600?
No, HoI2 only supports 1024x768. It's possible that the monitor supports 1024x768 but its ability to handle that res has degraded with age.

The exact problem is that your monitor does not support a horizontal frequency rate of around 60 khz, it only supports 30-55khz horizontally.

Video hardware website

Quote from the above website

Different video resolutions use different horizontal frequencies. For example, the standard VGA resolution of 640x480 requires a horizontal resolution of 31.5KHz, whereas the 800x600 resolution requires a vertical frequency of at least 72Hz and a horizontal frequency of at least 48KHz. and the 1280x1024 resolution requires a vertical frequency of 60Hz and a horizontal frequency of 64KHz. If the vertical frequency increases to 75Hz at 1280x1024, the horizontal frequency must be 80KHz. For a super-crisp display, look for available vertical frequencies of 75Hz or higher and horizontal frequencies of up to 90KHz or more. My favorite 17'' NEC monitor supports vertical resolutions of up to 75Hz at 1600x1200 pixels, 117Hz at 1024x768, and 160Hz at 640x480!

I had the same problem a long time ago with a very cheap 17inch monitor.

I am afraid that you are out of luck.

Corey

If you give me the info I requested, maybe I could help you out.

Sorry about that, I thought I posted this before.

What do the spec for your monitor say, is it supposed to be able to support 1024x768?

Is there a specific monitor config file for your make and brand or are you using the default one?

I suppose you do not have the manual for the monitor any longer?
That gives you the info we need.

I see you are using a default driver which is not ideal.
But if you monitor can really display 1600x1200
you should have no problem with 1024x768

Current Mode: 800 x 600 (16 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
Monitor Max Res: 1600,1200

A Plug'N Play driver that says 1600x1200 doesn't mean that the actual monitor supports that though :)

I'd bet 5 bucks that coreymas observation/comment above is the issue here.

MEC and Castellon,

I am 100% certain that the problem is not Software related it is a hardware issue as I described above.

MEC when the monitor changes and shows the error message, is there a loud clicking noise just before the message appears? If so that is your monitor trying to change frequencies to display a 1024 X 768 image as requested by your video card and it is failing.

I even looked up MEC's monitors specs (do a search on the internet for it... you will find it).... it does not support a horizontal freq of 60khz which is what is required to display 1024 X 768.

If you are considering buying a new monitor that happens to be a CRT, try to get one with a very wide range of horizontal and vertical freqs.... the wider you get the more resolutions you will be able to support.

Trust me guys I know what I am talking about, and MEC I would suggest getting a new monitor, the one you have even if it could display 1024 X 768 would show things very tiny.... not good for you eyes.

By the way, the Plug and Play driver that you are mentioning is the default driver that Windows uses to try and control a monitor. It gets installed and used when Windows cannot detect or does not have a specific driver for your monitor. Don't rely on its properties to tell you what your monitor is capable of.

Yours humbly

Corey

Guys I know all that.

I am just trying to verify, before I suggest the big step of buying a new monitor. ;)

I was looking for him to supply the stats for the monitor, but if you have looked them up for his particular model, well I guess that answers that.

However since HOI2 uses DirectX and you can override the refresh rate in DirectX I was going to explore that route as well. What was the maximum value that the specs you looked up said the monitor could handle?

30-55 Horizontal, 50-110 vertical. According to this website:

Website

Can you get a 1024 X 768 image to show with a horizontal less than 58?

If so I would LOVE you to tell me how, I can go and get that old 17 inch back out of the closet....

Honestly even if you can get the image to come up, it is going to be very blurry and small isnt it?

Also don't misunderstand my intentions, I hate having to tell someone their hardware won't cut it....

Corey

Yes I have to agree that a new monitor looks like the best solution.
That must be one old monitor that cannot display 1024x768.
