Vehicles aren't really worth it.

I hope they add to them, honestly. Possibly to create or evolve/breed better variants. More variety. Keeping primary weapons on some mounts etc...

Yeah, apart from putting a hero in a Flyer to command a flying stack of mobile assists/shock troops, I also Refrain from using vehicles nowadays. And to the "Hero gets more Skill Points": Yes, but at the cost of one trait Point. Could be worth it though... I tend to take the 2 free techs at the start, but maybe foregoing them and instead going vehicle would be worth it... Hmmmmm.

True, but it's a lot of fun to use your APC to rush forwards, create cover and have a trooper right behind. (in the early game phases). Helps with pushing forwards on some maps where covers is weirdly placed (or just 50% explosives that you don't wanna get near).

Oh and another thing I don't like some of the mounts is not getting to see your hero. I kinda wish we either could see the hero through a hatch or something or somehow customize it with a decal or paint job to make them noticeably different at a glance. Basically I find the tank mounts kinda boring visually compared to say the Harrier and Tryannodon of the Amazons. It wouldn't make much sense for the hero to be sticking out the hatch during battle, but would be a bit more aesthetically pleasing to me.

Don't use things you don't like. I also never play assembly because their art style is just so over the top, and they could be right out of doom, not fitting their background story in my opinion. The art style basically is based on demons not cyborgs.
So don't use stuff you don't like and enjoy your time :)

Vehicles are a must if you want your heroes to be involved in combats on large maps. Mobility is a prime tenet of warfare... this happens to be exactly why the T4 units are garbage in AoW Planetfall - with 24 movement (except 1, that doesn't count because it costs influence to "summon"), they're just always left behind as I'm surging through enemy territory. As for Piloting 2, don't even bother with it; but not because of the points or the mobility (there are a couple options for T3 Vehicles with good mobility); but because the T3/T4 vehicles all cost Cosmite to replace. There just is never enough Cosmite in games to keep up with making units with their mods. Thus you can't justify the 40/50 Cosmite cost to replace a hero's vehicle. Of course, there are millions of strategies one can employ from fast, zerg armies that die often (Ai strategy) to slow and powerful armies that are hard to bring down... I prefer maximum mobility units that are powerful and never die.

It is quite unfortunate, though, that the vehicles occupy the hero's primary weapon slot... I'd rather the vehicles didn't come with built in weapons, and instead they came with a weapon slot that I could fill with some compatible weapon - this way I could have a bit more control over the tactical application of my heroes.

the main thing you want in a hero mount is strong capabilities you couldn't get otherwise. A mounted Dvar hero starts in a Bulwark, giving them access to Agile Overwatch (and Concussion Volley.) A Syndicate Psi-bike has an amazing main gun and AOE immobilize. But on the other hand, a Vanguard assault bike gives you little you couldnt get with a shotgun and a grenade. The good mounts are fine, its the bland mounts that feel pointless because they are.

The other problem is not intrinsic to Piloting but rather a matter of loot quality. You can expect to get at least some tier3 weapons over the course of a game with strong secondary effects, bouncing shots and so on. That does not happen for vehicle mounts though and even if it did you could very well lose the mount. Tier3-4 vehicle mounts are very rare as loot and not intrinsically stronger than research.

You have a point there. I found an Imperial Tank mount once. That thing was pretty sweet but had horrible movement, 24 i think? Made it quite hard to use. After like 20 or so turns I had my commander switch from imperial tank to vanguard tank.
