Just started a DC Grand Campaign. First thing was to take an Indian port, for which I was given five galleons full of marines. I took the port, losing one ship, and when I came back to the strategic screens the fleet was no longer there. All gone.

yep, you only get those ships to take one port and only one. Once you've done that they're taken away from you.
I guess the crews are now being forced to work in the port. Burn your ships behind you. Thanks for the answer.
