The game constantly flickers; the screen that is. The mouse cursor 'smears', it leaves a trails when I move it. I've tried different resolutions, tried windowed mode, nothing seems to work. I close all programs, thinking another program was trying to focus, still doesn't work. Also, I downloaded the 1.08 patch and have no idea on how to install it. I bought this game off of Steam. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. :)

I'm having the same problem as OP initially had. When I load up AOD from Steam or from the .exe file, the screen flickers and the mouse smears.


I've tried several solutions including a clean install from Steam including...

1) Clean Install --> No Patch --> Launch from Steam
2) Clean Install --> No Patch --> Launch from .exe file
3) Clean Install --> Patch 1.08 & 1.09 --> Launch from Steam
4) Clean Install --> Patch 1.08 & 1.09 --> Launch from .exe file
5) Various attempts at little fixes like running in XP Service Pack 2 compatbility mode or 256 colors...etc.

I'd really like to play AOD again so if someone could be helpful, that would be fantastic. Most of the Steam forum replies about this problem are condescending.

EDIT: Bought Darkest Hour, same problem. Tried installing it seperately from Steam and switching both monitors to 16 bit color w/e its called, still didn't work. Tried both windowed mode and full screen. Really getting fed up b/c I don't know how much work I have to do in order to just play a goddamn game.

I have the same problem. I just installed AoD from CD and patched it to 1.09. The strange thing is, i installed und deinstalled the game multiple times in the last years, but this never happens to me. What i find out is, on my desktop pc with ATI card it works fine, on my notebook with NVIDIA it flickers and the mouse smears. Is this perhaps a problem with the NVIDIA (latest) driver?

I installed a clean version from my CD, it was 1.02 and it flickers and the mouse smears. I never had this before and i dont have these problems an my Desktop PC, only at my Notebook.
 
On your Laptop it may run on the Intel GFX instead of your nvidia card. Intel drivers are known to be somewhat problematic and very often you are bound to outdated drivers supplied by your Laptop manufacturer. nvidia control panel should have an option to force using the nvidia gfx - just point it to the game executable aodgame.exe

got the same problem. Do not have a Laptop.
It concerns not only AOD but HOI 2 and Darkest Hour!

All the games worked before without a problem. I reinstalled the games several times and no success.

It works now fine for me, so here is what i find out!
On my Notebook are a Intel integrated Grafic and a NVIDIA GPU. If i use the NVIDIA Geforce Grafic it flickers and the mouse smears, no matter what version of the game (testet with 1.02; 1.08 and 1.09)! If i switch to the integrated Intel Grafic all works fine. So it MUST be a probleme with NVIDIA, the driver or the settings for the driver. Hope it helps!
