Flickering screen

I seem to have a problem with my EU2 and my display driver. I am using 1.07 Strategy First US version. The game seems to "flicker" (i.e. flashes of black screen, very quick) when I play it. Sometimes it's so frequent (every second or so) that it's unplayable. It's sort of random -- usually it's there and only happens every 10-30 seconds, which is playable but annoying.

My video card is a NVidia GeForce2, with the latest driver, and I'm using DirectX 9

I've renamed the avi folder to something else, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I've also tried playing on different resolutions, but it doesn't work either.

If you were to reduce your video card refresh rate to 60hz, would that solve the problem?
I kinda remember something like that...

Hmmm, after some experimenting..... seems like I found the problem.

The problem seems to stem from the blinking that results from the systray display of the internet connection dialog -- you know, those two little computers with a line in between showing you that you're connected to the internet. Seems like if I disable that display in the systray I'm good to go. I guess everytime it blinks the EU2 screen flickers....

Yup background programs can cause this problem.
