I have heard somewhere that there was an war, between brazil and argentina i beleive, which was caused by a football game. Or atleast it was so they claimed.
IS THIS TRUE ??

I agree. But , as i beleive, is that the reason was something else but they blamed the football. IF it is true..

I know many very stupid wars in History (No, I don't beleive that wars are automatically stupid) : The Chaco War, The 31-million-people-dead Chinese religious revolt in the 19th century because of a madcow peasant taking himself for Jesus-Christ reincarnated, the manoeuver "invasion" of Lichtenstein by Switzerland (Yup :D), the "war without a fight" between Great-Britain and Bolivia, the Swedish-Prussian War of 1757 to piss off the Swedish Queen, osv.

But I think "this" is an historical Urban Legend, like the death of Louis XVI voted by one vote, and the malediction on United States Presidents elected on a date which is a multiple of 20. I've never heard of such a casus belli.

The Football war.
El Salvador vs Honduras.
A disputed World Cup Qualifier played in Honduras in the seventies resulted in an invasion of the country by El Salvador. When the fighting ended a week later due to the mediation of other local countries over a thousand people were dead.

I'm afraid that this war is not an Urban Legend. It really happened and is referred to in even reputable history books as the "Football War". You just had the wrong pair of Latin American countries, I'm afraid.

This isn't really a legend, although there obviously isn't a "curse" on presidents elected in these years, it's just a coincidence. But the presidents elected in 1840 (William Henry Harrison who died of pneumonia at the beginning of his term), 1860 (Lincoln, who of course was assassinated), 1880 (Garfield, who was assassinated by Charles Guiteau over the spoils system), 1900 (McKinley, who was assassinated by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist), 1920 (William Harding, who died of illness early in his next term), 1940 (FDR, who died early in his next term, which was his fourth), and 1960 (Kennedy, assassinated) all died untimely deaths, thus making 7 presidents elected in years ending in 0 in a row to have done so compared to only two previous ones in 1800 and 1820 who hadn't. However, Reagan apparently broke the streak (although he of course survived an assassination attempt in which he was shot).

He(RR) would have died from it too, had it happened a few years ealier.

Yupp, this is tru, but the real reason the fighting ended was the supply situation of both countries. They pretty mutch used up what ever little war stock they had...

About 6 years ago a colombian defender was killed for making an own goal. Talk about disciplanary punishment;)

My personal favorite - The War of Jenkin's Ear. Ok there was some other stuff going on, but you have to admit, going to war and killing like, err... whole people... over someone's ear really deserves the prize.......

Yes, I remember the death of the Colombian defender as well, the own goal was in a World Cup group match vs. the USA, because of Columbia's defeat in that match she failed to advance out of the group and upon the teams return home a group of gangsters cornered the player in question in a restaurant and shot him about 20 times, (a little bit excessive there). It seems they wagered a little too heavily on the match and questioned the reason of how the own goal occurred!

Yes the football war was true but the real reason for the war was a dispute between the borders of Honduras and El Salvador. The soccer game just ignited the war it wasn't the reason.

The border dispute had been there for some time-the football match was the actual trigger, so it was the principle cause of this particular war, not the other issues between the countries.

good thing i stoped plying voilent sports like football and started with the peace-loving non-voilent sport tae kwon do ;)

(for these who doesnt know, in Tae kwon do you kick eachother :))

Nobody ever heard of the 20 brazilians dying of heart attack in the 1950 decisive game of Brazil against Uruguay (in Rio de Janeiro)? Uruguay beat Brazil in the last couple of minutes. Brazil only needed a draw to become world champion.
Since then Brazil doesn't play in blue shirts, but in yellow.

Undoubtedly the silliest war of all time was fought in 1896 between the British Empire and the pretender Sultan of Zanzibar.

The British battle fleet arrived on 27 August and an ultimatum to the Sultan to vacate the palace was delivered, and declined. Fighting broke out at 9.02am. At 9.40am the war had ended.

The major battle of the war was the destruction of the Zanzibar fleet, which consisted of one ocean tramp. It was sunk with two shells. The Sultan's palace was completely destroyed: the British later presented a bill for the cost of the ammunition used, which had to be paid by the local residents.

Thirty-eight minutes remains a record for the quickest war ever fought. :D
