It has been brought to my attention that there is an option to make it so minors cannot be annexed. What I want to know is: Are there exemptions from this rule, as it would be a bit silly if Russia could not annex the Khanates, and Spain could not annex the Aztecs and Incas? If so, would this mode of play be more realistic than having forced annexations on, since France wouldn't be able to just steamroll over the minors in Germany and Italy? A detailed reply would be great.

Strange that I have not recieved even one reply yet. I feel once I get the game I may want to try playing with forced annexation off (cuts down on the blitzkrieg factor that unfortunately seems to dominate this game).

I would like to know more about this option (how it effects gameplay and play balance), and if there are any exceptions for minors that were quickly and easily conquered in history.

This could be a very significant issue, especially for multiplayer games which could otherwise degenerate into a race to see who can increase their military research the fastest and swarm over the map as fast as possible (ala Civ 2).

I can't imagine that this question is really that difficult to answer, so can someone please reply and tell me their opinions on having forced annexation off and if they think it would be more historical than having it on? Thanks! :)

Yes. Indeed. I will post my opinions. They are highly regarded. Or so I've heard. :D

I've never tried playing with annexation off, since I'm an imperialistic chauvinist.

However, I will offer my highly theoretical musings on the issue!

Annexation off will slow down the expansion of many (not all) nations. Most notably, Russia, Poland, France and Austria. Still, you can expand pretty swiftly anyway, you just can't take the capitals of the unfortunate wimps.

I imagine annexation off would be better for multiplayer, though. As you said, there would be less moshing and jockeying for positions in central europe that way...

Still, I like having the option of annexing (screw historical correctness, if I wanted everything to go according to history, I would be READING about it, not playing EU...)

As far as singleplayer games go, I doubt I will ever turn off the annexation option (possibly on a dare) because it leaves me less freedom to go about my game the way I want to.

In multiplayer, I would like to try both kinds, and I doubt you will be able to be as agressive in mp as in sp, since there will be people there to actually take notice and respond according to your expansion...

Well, them's my thoughts on the subject anyway...

Really a question on relations...

I started CG as england, as soon as my stability increased to +3 I declared war on scotland. Routed their army in the marches, then set off to storm the whole of Scotland. Spain left the alliance when I delcared war, so I invited Hanover in, they accepted.
Took less than a year, and I annexed scotland and got their 5 battleships.

Next france declares war, I route their ships in the channel, then sue for peace (no tribute) which they accept.

Next thing I know is I check my relationships. All have dropped by about 100 points. Hannover from +175 to +75, Osterich down to +1. Basically all realations are now -ve.
Any idea what caused this, was it me crushing the Scots or because I bottled out of the war with France?

Only other thing I tried to do was trade maps with the marmalukes, (just to make sure I understood what the button did).

So what caused my relations to plumet?

Poland, Spain, and France all have -200.

Whenever you annex a minor all the other countries with the same religion have a massively negative modifier... Like -100 sounds about right..

Annexing Scotland did the tricks. And everybody who's seen Braveheart can probably understand it. I mean: Mel Gibson just scored this french chick, and next things he's dead. No wonder Poland, Spain and France hate you, those are some fairly romantic people.

Seriously, annexing countries screw up your relations with most other countries.
