i've only just realised you've started this :eek:o looking very interesting and slightly confusing so far. i think you will be playing as japan, allies with the US and fighting an alliance of Britain and Russia. Thats why different nations' ships are in funny places.

The following Chapter is dedicated in honor of Draco Rexus...

Chapter II: Rule Britannia...

Insight_focus_nov02_edwardvii_large.jpg

Following the successful conclusion of the Portsmouth negotiations, the crown prince boarded an Imperial Navy cruiser for the trip back to Japan. First he would travel to Great Britain where; among other things, he planned to meet with officials of the Vickers company to resolve problems concerning the supply and delivery of guns for the Imperial Navy's newest Capital Ships.

While in London, Prince Yukihito was to pay a call on Britain's King Edward VII, the man known to many as "The Uncle of Europe"

..."I trust your voyage was a pleasant one your highness?" Edward said rising to meet his guest.

Yukihito smiled. "Of course your Majesty... Although I will confess to a touch of seasickness after rough seas last night."

Edward laughed. "Quite understandable! I've experienced it my self!" He gestured for the prince to sit and then resumed his seat in the over sized chair as a servant entered. "A Brandy perhaps?" Edward offered.

"Thank you, Your Majesty." The servant poured a glass for the prince and then withdrew as Edward lit a cigar.

"I must say we were all surprised to hear the final outcome of your talks in the United States..."

"Yes... Well I was surprised myself.. But at least we now have an honorable peace."

"Quite indeed so."

"It is fortunate that Japan has good ties with dependable allies such as the British Empire and hopefully with the United States as well. There are; however, still nations who seem to be on an aggressive footing... Germany comes to mind."

Edward nodded somberly. He had never been fond of his nephew the Kaiser whom his mother Queen Victoria had doted upon.

The young prince leaned forward uncomfortably. "Your Majesty... I first would like to reaffirm my country's commitments to stand beside Britain in any crisis..."

"Thank you your Highness... though I still hope sanity may yet prevail in my nephew's head."

"Yes... Forgive me your Majesty.. perhaps it is only my limited understanding? But I read in the London Times about plans to grant I believe the term was "Dominion Status" to New Zealand?"

"Correct... It is only fitting that these subjects of the Crown be granted the same rights of self rule as those on the streets of London your Highness."

"But does this 'Self Rule' imply a dissolution of the British Empire? The tree breaks easier after it has been split into many branches does it not."

Edward gestured with his cigar. "Japan need not worry for the health of the British Empire... That the Empire's many peoples may seek to govern themselves... They are all equals under the Crown...."

"Ah! So they are all equals under one Empire..."

The Empire Decree of 1906

The Empire Decree of 1906 was a document issued by King Edward VII of Great Britain which became the basis for the "Imperial Resurgence" during the first four decades of the twentieth century. The context of this document is as follows:

"Wherein the separate territories, provinces, and dominions are equals in all regards to each other and no territory subordinate to another, they and their citizens exist as equals under the Authority of the British Empire, The self said same Monarch of which and of the Imperial offices he may empower to govern them as one peoples under the Imperial Crown of Britain."

Chapter III: The Great White Fleet

Teddy_s-Great-White-Fleet-743x295.jpg

October 18, 1908

Aboard the Battlecruiser Tsukuba

"Sir! Signal from the Flagship! The American Fleet has been confirmed approaching on specified course."

"Very good. Have the gunners stand by to fire salute."

"Aye sir!"

The Captain peered through his field glasses and nodded in approval as the procession of sixteen ornately decorated warships advanced through the fog in crisp formation. He handed the glasses to his exec. "A fine fleet Watanabe."

"The Americans are much better sailors than the Russians." The XO agreed.

"Indeed... It is a good day to be at peace."

Aboard the Battleship USS Kansas

"Hey Bill! Damn! You gotta admit they make 'em pretty." A Midshipman noted to a classmate observing the Japanese welcoming fleet at anchor

The Midshipman nodded as they manned the rails. "Some of those used to be Russian Battleships."

"Yeah but these Japs did a damn fair job of handling them."

"Oh I don't know... Seems like it was an even split."

"How you figure Bill?"

"Simple half and half... The Japs got the top half of the Pacific and the Russians got the bottom half...."

They're actually smokestacks, but you know how cutbacks are.

I chuckled at this... :D

I'm really wondering where this is headed... I hope this new Japan isn't as rape happy as the OTL Japan. The whole Nanjing massacre still runs high on my list of reasons not to ever play as Japan.

If it is then it will undoubtedly share the fate of its OTL self. So far Prince Yukihito has proven a catalyst for change but I guarantee that those changes do not stop here. Soon they will affect Germany and the balance of Europe.

One thing to said for Yukihito is that no one will ever argue that he was not involved....

Those cage masts are a peculiar feature of American naval design that I personally am glad were abandoned later. Things practically scream "Shoot at me!"

Trivia: One of the Two Midshipmen featured in the last post is a young William F "Bull" Halsey. Halsey did indeed make the cruise of the Great White Fleet aboard the Kansas in OTL.

Chapter IV: Succession

745px-Emperor_Meiji_Taimo1912.jpg

July 30, 1912 saw the death of the Meiji Emperor. Only 59 years old at the time of his death, his reign had seen the coming of Commodore Perry's "Black Ships" and the end of Japan's isolation.. The end of the Shogunate... The restoration of imperial authority... Wars with China and Russia which had made Japan a player on the world stage... All the way to Admiral Sperry's "Great White Fleet" and the emergence of Japan as an industrial dynamo.

Now came the matter of Imperial succession.... Were many in Japan's ruling circles to have their way, the throne would have gone to Prince Togu, also known as Yoshihito. Yukihito; the Prince Take, was far too vocal and assertive for their liking. Also while Yoshihito had three sons, his elder brother had only fathered daughters to date. The oldest being the four year old Princess Hoshiko. Decades earlier there had been talk of amending Japan's Constitution to formally exclude any female succession but as the Meiji Emperor had fathered two (Relatively) healthy sons, it had seemed unnecessary. But as Yukihito had no sons the specter of a female succession question loomed in the future.

In any event it was The Prince Take whom his father had chosen as his successor and if the new Emperor (Soon to be titled the Taisho Emperor)'s past were any indicator he would make no move to bar the path of his daughter to the throne after him...

Men who had seen themselves becoming the power behind the Imperial throne could now only wait as the new Emperor prepared to assert himself in Japan and in the world.

Oh, pretty pictures!!! Subscribes now.

I still don't have clue where this is heading but it looks like it will be an interesting ride.

Okay... Feedback time:
First thanks to all of you who have signed on to the little journey. Hopefully it'll be worth the ride.

Also Thanks to Draco Rexus and Cascadia for inspiration!

Now... As for where this aar is going... I'm inclined to wait on saying. The ripples are still coming and one decision pushed by the new Taisho Emperor will have some notable repercussions across Europe.

Rather a bit... Possibly a miscalculation on the Emperor's part.... We'll see.
