"The people of our states will not accept another King ruling over them after removing another from above their heads. The very fact that this Continental Congress exists shows the belief in republicanism held by our people. Neither should men of business hold the power of our new nation, least we trade political oppression for one of economic. No, we must look to the governments of ancient Rome and Athens, where the people chose their leaders through elections, based on their qualifications and popularity with the common man. Like wise, the policies of our nation that would deal with such things as trade would be decided by those elected by the people, to act as their representative and decide as the people would decide, so that only the wishes of the people are carried out. Any else and we are simply trading an oppressive government from across the ocean for one here on our own shores."
