HEART OF AFRICA
A 1980's Central African Republic Forum Game

lh6Yh38.png

Hello everyone! I've decided to throw my hat into the forum game ring, so to say, and start up my own. Expect chaos and political instability, to say the least, and what better way to stir up some chaos and political instability than select a nation that has had the unfortunate status of being one of the world's poorest countries, in part due to corruption within the various governments that were succeeded mostly through various coups. Will you fight for "democracy" or for your very own cult of personality? The choice is yours in Heart of Africa.

-IMPORTANT INFORMATION-
1. To join the official Heart of Africa IRC, please go to http://www.coldfront.net/tiramisu/ and type in /join #HoA_Main - this will give you access to our IRC which should contain the majority of OOC chatter and banter and keep it off of my pristine topic. Note that while you do not need to be on IRC, I can not guarantee what agreements and decisions will be made there, so it's at your own risk that you do not join.

2. I will not tolerate under any circumstances material which explicitly goes against the Paradox Forums' rules, nor will I tolerate any actions taken in character for OOC reasons.

3. This forum game is always open to new players, so feel free to join regardless of what point we are at.

-DACKO-

In April 1976, the Central African capital of Bangui was faced with a minor protest which would spell the beginning of the end for then-Emperor of Central Africa Jean-Bédel Bokassa’s regime in the nation. He had recently instituted a law mandating students to purchase expensive uniforms from a company owned by one of his wives. In a small act of civil disobedience, a group of young students took to the streets in protest of this mandate. Despite the relatively peaceful nature of the protests, Bokassa issued an order to “pacify the protesters.” His men did exactly that, and rumors claim he helped with the undertaking himself. Bullets ripped holes in the walls of buildings, innocent children were slaughtered, and the organizers of the rally were publicly executed. By the end of the day, over one hundred students were dead, and the public was in outrage.

An “Imperial Guard” brings a group of surviving children to a “punishment center.”

Relations between the French government and Bokassa had already begun to freeze over, and with a human rights catastrophe looming over the dictator’s shoulders, they finally made the decision to reinstall the very man they had helped depose in the first place, former President David Dacko. Dacko had promised social and civil rights reform and with French assistance had soon couped Bokassa and sent him into exile. Dacko’s first act was to restore the former name of the nation, and The Central African Republic was reborn.

Former President David Dacko

Dacko, however, would appear to be a man not worthy of such trust, and after nearly two years as President had failed to achieve nearly any of the reforms he had promised to the Central African people, but still managed to be re-elected in a moderately free election. Immediately after the election, however, would be where his problems would arise.

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing’s loss in the 1981 French elections signalled the end of support for Dacko.

Dacko belonged to a minority group in the Central African Republic and was widely viewed as a puppet of the French. This became even worse when many of his rivals (who were considerably more well-liked and belonged to major ethnic groups,) began to challenge his authority and call for his dismissal. Naturally, Dacko refused to step down and insisted that he be granted the chance to finish his term before allowing the people to vote him out of office. Very few believed him, and with his continual failure to please neither the French nor his people, Dacko was in an unstable position. This was only made worse by the calls for armed rebellion such as those that had brought regime changes in other countries. Chaos was on the horizon.

At this point I'd just like to verify that you are aware that editing posts is currently restricted to within ten minutes of the post's creation. This is a bug that Paradox is currently striving to fix, but the point stands that all of those reserved posts are, currently, useless.

Well, there are other forums running the same software without any restrictions, so I have no doubts that it should be able to be fixed eventually, and when it is fixed, I will be lucky enough to have posts reserved already. ;)

Edit:

As of now, it looks like I can still edit the previous posts, even though it has been longer than 10 minutes, so perhaps they fixed the issue recently.

Name: André Kolingba
Date of Birth: 12 August, 1936
Biography: Born in Bangui in 1936, Kolingba, a member of the Yakoma ethnic group, began his military career in 1954 when he joined the French Army. Once the Central African Republic gained independence, Kolingba was transferred to the new state's military. He steadily rose through the ranks, becoming a brigadier general in 1973. Kolingba served in the government of Emperor Bokassa I as Aide-de-camp, as well as Ambassador to Canada and later the Federal Republic of Germany. Having gained favour under David Dacko's current regime, Kolingba seeks promotion in the Central African military and, possibly, prominence in Central African politics.

Name: Joseph Djotodia
Date of Birth: October 15, 1941
Biography: Joseph was born in Kabo to a Muslim family part of the Sara minority that existed in the country. His father was head of a mine and as a result the family was able to save enough money to send him to school in Bangui. He received high marks and ended up going to college in Kuwait. While there he traveled around the Arabian peninsula and became more in touch with his religion and upon his return home he became an Imam opening up his own mosque for the Sara people living in Kabo. During his liftetime he has seen much injustice against Muslims and the Kabo people as well as the rampant corruption of the last two regimes. After some Muslim protesters in Kabo were shot he called for the establishment of a militia to protect the people of his community. Joseph does not have many long term goals right now but he does know one thing the regime must go.

Yousef Coney

DoB: 16th of December 1949

Leader of the Great People’s Socialist African Liberation Front

Yousef is a Muslim family in the Eastern part of the Central African Republic. He studied in Khartoum and Cairo, and recently in Tripoli. From there he got influenced with the Marxist and Maoist thoughts, and has now returned to this homeland to liberate it from capitalists and French imperialist puppets. The bourgeoisie must also be destroyed for Central Africa to properly thrive. Some claim that Colonel Gaddafi of Libya is supporting him and his underground fringe movement based in the Sudanese border region.

Biography:
James was born to one of the few wealthy families in his region, and spent his childhood and teenage years in expensive boarding schools in Switzerland. Having grown angry at the world of the rich, James fled his last school at age seventeen and traveled to Syria, where for 4 years he was a mercenary soldier. He would later move to Libya, where he studied Political Science at the university of Tripoli. His father has since disowned him but soon later lost his fortune. James came back to Central Africa in 1978, and has since been working on establishing a true People's Republic.

Name: Hussein Obongo
Date of Birth: April 20th, 1959

Bio: Born into poverty, raised in poverty, and growing up in a country that was oppressed directly and indirectly by foreign forces and the evils of capitalism, at a young age Hussein was convinced that change needed to come to the Central African Republic. On values that he saw on his travels to Benin and Congo, and that he heard in the Saudi-funded mosques of neighbouring Sudan. With no clout, he has only his ...remarkable ideas blending anarcho-communism and Islamic teachings, and an FN FAL to lead the way for the Central African peoples.

Name: Lieutenant General Ga'far Muhammad Oueddei
Date of Birth: 19 March, 1928
Position: Commander of the National Gendarmerie
Biography: Born a Muslim of Fulani descent in northeastern Ubangi-Shari in 1928, Ga'far Muhammad would spend most of his childhood in his village. Growing bored of his lifestyle and seeking more he would leave his village in mid 1944 at the age of sixteen and make his way to Bangui where he would join the French Colonial Army. He would serve for seven years before being dishonorably dismissed in 1951 when it was found he sympathized with Boganda's MESAN. Freed from his previous restrictions he would join MESAN outright and advocate for independence. In 1957 he would be one of the individuals elected to Territorial Assembly and supported Boganda's movement towards independence and the formation of the Central African Republic. Tragically Boganda would die in a plane crash in 1959 and his cousin, David Dacko, would assume the reins of government and lead the nation into independence. Although a member of the National Assembly he would resign in 1961 to take up service in the Armed Forces and with a growing friendship with President Dacko he found himself rising through the ranks at a rapid pace, reaching the rank of Major by 1963, Colonel by 1964 and finally Brigadier General in early 1965. As fate would have it Colonel Bokassa would lead a successful coup on 31 December 1965 ousting David Dacko, suspending the constitution and dissolving the National Assembly. Ga'far Muhammad, keen to save his career and his life, recognized Bokassa's authority and was rewarded with retaining his rank and receiving further promotion to Major General in 1969. However relations would sour between him and Bokassa in 1972 when the aforementioned declared himself 'President for Life'. Major General Oueddei would attempt to lead a coup and, having failed, flee to Paris to join his former ally David Dacko in Paris. The two would reconcile during their time in France and with Bokassa's overthrew in 1979 he returned to the country and was restored in his military capacity with a further promotion to Lieutenant General and command being given to him by President Dacko over the National Gendarmerie. However with opposition to Dacko growing and Ga'far angered by the lack of progress it seems likely their ties of goodwill may disappear soon...

Name: Colonel Louis Mouza
Date of Birth: April 16, 1940
Biography: Louis Mouza was born to Catholics of the Banda people in the waning days of the Second World War. Mouza was an enthusiastic supporter of independence, and quickly joined the military once it was achieved. His competence and effort to curry favours led to him becoming a Captain by the time of the Bokassa coup in 1965. He supported the coup, but too late to get spoils from it. However his competence and lack of coup attempts lead to him steadily rising the ranks through the next decade, becoming a Colonel by 1976, shortly after Bokassa crowned himself Emperor. Mouza was never a major supporter of Bokassa, and was swift to turn on him when the outcry in 1979 began, which is why he retained his rank and position. Currently he hopes to see the nation guided to a better and more stable future, though he is not sure which ideological path would best achieve that.

Name: Napoleon Imana Kafi Ndunga
Current Occupation: President of the Central African Restorationist Movement and Affiliates (CARMA)
Age: 33

Biography: Born to an ardent supporter a right-wing Central African nation, Napoleon Imana Kafi Ndunga is one of the leading figures among the monarchist movement. He can be seen giving speeches about what he sees as the 'abysmal state of affairs the the Central African Republic' and 'the totalitarian regime of Dacko'. Napoleon wants to restore the Central African Empire and lead the Central African nation into history as one of the greatest nations to ever exist. Glory to the Central African Empire!

Name: Francois Henri Mathieu
Date of Birth: 8 May 1932
Occupation: Political Activist, Red Cross Volunteer
Biography: Mathieu was born in 1932 to a Haitian-Creole family in the slums of Bangui, where he would often learn by his personal mentor and father, David Jacques Mathieu (b. 1910) how to read, write, and speak fluent French, Haitian and the local Baya language. Mathieu later moved out of Bangui to attend the prestigious University of Cape Town in South Africa to study Law, where he learned how to speak English and a bit of Afrikaans. There, he also met his future wife Mary Elizabeth Whelton (b. 1933), who would influence his ideals later on in life. But, feeling a sense of change after protesting for better rights for minorities at the school in 1951, Mathieu dropped out of university and moved back to Bangui to campaign for better rights and reforms for the locals. On 14 November 1954, he and 20 other local officials in the area marched in the area for rights for immigrants, which ultimately lead to a bloody aftermath, with 6 of the peaceful protesters killed in the process. Nevertheless, Mathieu continued his crusader against poverty and discrimination by moving to Charleston, South Carolina in the USA during the late 1960's to protest along with other fellow minorities during the American Civil Rights Movement. He then went back to South Africa to marry Whelton in a small, private ceremony only attended by a few family members, mainly due to the racial attitude towards native Africans during that time in South Africa. Shortly after their honeymoon, Mathieu signed up to join the Red Cross Organization in South Africa to further gain the approval of his fellow minorities. But, just a few months after, Mathieu went back to Bangui with a social-democratic ideal in mind, and a goal to unite all Central Africans truly under one banner.
(( BTW, this may seem quite silly of me, but where do I exactly put in the whole /join #HoA_Main part? I tried to put it as my nickname, thinking it'll work, but it does nothing, and when I put it on my toolbar, it leads to an Error:404 message. What do I do?))

((I believe the issue you might be having is that you need to first enter your nickname as you want it to appear when the client prompts you, then in the chat interface you type the command. Forgive me if that's not what your issue has been, but it's good to have you on board at the least!))
