Year 212 June-December

Woodard Enterprises

Trying to get into the Weapons Boom, to support the imperial subjugation war of kusma, Woodard works through the season to open up a small and modern weapons building factory. The cost are high as such after negotiations he obtains a 25,000 golden iridian credit from the Iridia Imperial bank. He would open its doors by the end of the year, however maybe he did so too late for the war boom? Is a thought that cross his mind as news from kusma reach the empire as a whole.( + small modern weapons factory)(+25k golden Iridian in debt)}

Meanwhile his new business is being build, Woodard begins to establish connections with reputable merchants and businessmen, in so increasing his pull with them and contacts. (+10 prestige)

Lysander Thorne

The Misery once more takes to the seas, assaulting shipping that may look like attempting to go into the waters of kusma, of course kusma is now chock full of imperial ships with all the southern and part of the central fleet located on it as such the ship simple decided to raid ships that May* look into going to kusma. The season is a productive one with two XX merchant ships raided and a Mivean merchant assaulted. It all nets Thorne some 5,000 golden iridian in stolen cargo, of course he is careful his activities aren't linked to himself, for now.

Thorne sends quietly surveyors to Carbonna in an attempt to find a iron deposits, he is exalted with news of a huge deposits reach him, what he discovered however this deposit have been just licit to the Lord Admiral as the first discoverer of it, shattering his dreams, however some legal advisors tell him he may still try to present his case to the regency and split the lease if he can “proof” he discovered at the same time.

Kelvin babbage

The inventor working for the bank continue his development of the second generation whale oil device, getting closer to a device that can be mass produced to attempt to propel ships and the like. (⅔ Second gen Propulsion enginer)

Babbage Whaling company expands its operations by building three new whaling ships, the modern vessels don't come for cheap but they are worth for the business (+3 Whaling ships)

Lamar Valiant

The Valiant Industries LAV gun finish development over the season, the unveiling act is great, as lamar begin to hope to attract investors, for production. Some desire to buy the designs but he for now refuse, one thing though is many doubt the use of the gun as need to show up actual use (an ic would work pretty nicely). (LAV gun completed)

Another great unveiling is the second generation Whale oil engine, capable of using more oil to powered up greater distances instead of one per house, or severals in a big house, now one could power up several houses, making it much more attractive. Many are interested on it or investing to get it producing too. (offers to come)

Emperor Victarian VIII

The grand birthday party of the emperor is the social occasion of the year, luxuries are everywhere and a grand dance is organized, many rumors come out of it, especially that the young emperor choose an unimportant noble some novers hick, lady abernathy for the first dance, much scandalous according to rich matriarch that wanted their daughters to have the honor! (+10 prestige)

Victarian hire a grand master painter, some Nicollo Mirian, from the Mivean nation to begin his great painting, a gift to himself for his coronation day.

qTF2wMi.jpg

The Emperor Painting
Colonel Frost

In the Romel university a great breakthrough is achieved, a new kind of weapon called the Breech-loader whale oil powered rifle is developed, eliminating the use of gun powder for whale oil propelled bullets. However who is the owner is a bit of a problem, the inventors even though working for the university claim they own it, meanwhile the university in the name of the frost family claim they own it, at the moment neither can produce the gun for lack of facilities, and it may turn however get to do so keeps the patent or into a legal battle.! (Romel Gun developed (can change name bakery, breech load rifle developed)

Professor P

The professor shows up a marvel!, a flying ship as he calls it, in reality is a globe , but is capable to take a person up into the skies!. His demonstration is him screaming at top lung, I DID I DID; I AM THE BEST!!!!!!!!!! (+10 prestige)

Stephen Harwick

Finally the margrave sent the money to Valiant industries that they had agreed for the designs of the LAV gun, 5,000 golden Iridians..however no answer from valiant comes nor designs when he unveils a few days later...have the margrave being ripped off in revenge?!

Regent Orwais

The Orawies bank administration, ask for a raise in the loans interest given by itself to the imperial state citing the conditions in the war of kusma and the damage to trade it has caused for the need. The Regent agrees with the request, which surprise none, what however will surprise much less people are the coming demands to raise interest from the other banks.

In an attempt to eliminate the possible growing Harwick´Farmers bank, the Oraweis bank begins giving very cheap loans to farmers on the region and buying their loans, effectively and even at a cost, they overtake much of the small affiliates with the harwicks bank, he recovers his money yet the bank is likely done for unless a great injection of capital can be made to compete with Oraweis, newly open Orawies Farmers bank.

Propaganda campaign for morale on the war times, as well glory of the empire are seen, as the state support theater works of the evil of republicanism, asking for imperial unity against the many enemies of the glorious nations. Many speakers and the church call for the swift defeat, and with the news coming out of the island raise the importance of the regent more and more (Some of the propaganda and speeches may picture her as as a valiant shield of the empire, especially among her supporters.) (+20 prestige)

Allison Greymarsh

The self described pirate queen, now on the run from bounty hunters, strikes a deal with the notorious captain jack, after some supplying in meladir, she is ambushed in the islands by a “good” friend of her, reminding her that there are no friends in the pirates, after a brutal struggle she manage to slay him and his men, escaping in her ships out of the islands and towards a new place, the famous unexplored continent. After much hardships and months in the sea they manage to arrive to an small island where they immediately set to build a base, the island itself have no population. (base established)(new world arrival)

Rear Admiral Sondus

The rear admiral spend most of his time training new sailors, however contacts in other lands bring him interesting news in Kaldosia, the current king was killed by a cousin, with his wife and daughter fleeing and coming to the empire looking for refugee, if someone would sponsor them.

Commodore Lazander/ captain Jack

Commodore Lazander and captain jack would have a famous battle at sea as she was out hunting pirates, the commodore saw two “Utican” ships in the waters coming from meladir island, this in itself was suspicious, however what alerted her of the fake ships was that she recognized one of the ships as the stolen form the imperial navy by the pirate, captain jack. How did she do that? She had worked for months learning all vessels, all marks and designs and manage to know each and every one of them (imperial navy ones).

As she hailed the ships, the captain understood the ruse was up and entered into combat with the Commodore, the battle put two corvettes versus a a three corvette squadron, the pirate was tricky and well known, but the imperial sailors are the best the battle raged for three hours until a cannon ball destroyed the mass of the second pirate ship, the captain understanding his chances of victory were being reduced, managed to escape by making his men roam the second ship into one of the imperial corvettes, as the ship sank and the captain escaped the commodore let him go in aras to save the drowning sailors.

The captain himself would escape detection after the incident and even though his plan damaged it was not impossible to carry on. He would reach Ateria city, and then wallop in rage as he discovered the imperial navy located on the city was not in there!. In rage he would change his plan, he would land his men, near 150, and launch a series of raids all around the island, after all teh city only had some 150 lightly armed police force.

Many costal villages would be sakced and burned, with tens of woman stolen and food and belongings taken. In a last act of defiance the captain would do an attack upon the city, meanwhile his single ship would not be enough to land he would bombard the city as teh coastal defences hit him. the attack upon ateria itself would not be very grand but would show captain jack was a fearsome enemy. In all the quick time raids upon the villages and so on would leave 300 death, fifty woman stolen, and around 1,000 golden iridian taken. This last act would be finally enough to send a dedicate hunting of the fearsome captain?
(+25 fame for captain jack)(+10 prestige commodore lazander)(+700 GI for captain jack, +50 woman for captain jack)(-1 corvette to captain jack)

Imperial Affairs Minister En-Ratel

The minister is very busy during the last part of the year, with a strong reorganization of his ministry being carried on, new cyphers created, personally moved from branches, new departments created and a very convoluted key scheme done, all improving greatly the workings and secrecy of it.

In another affairs, looking into some outlandish claims against the emperor cousin, broke not much to report, more than not the uncle was helping members with loans, and support in personal problems as well gambling and whoring with them.

Investigations into the istarian princess revealed she is 16 and a half years old, to be married at her 17 birthday as is the utican costume, no very different from any royalty, very spoiled, socialite, love to be at parties, rumors abound she may not be a lady anymore after some encounters with some nobles sons, but that is preposterous of course!. Some information obtained from a gossiping handmaiden, says she does not want to be married but is being forced to, things she may like are parties, horses, extravaganza and to tour the empire of iridia.

Lord Admiral Zweibrücken-Marsein

The Lord admiral obtain the lease for 65,000 golden Iridian on the land, and begin obtaining financing to build a mine in the land. After an investment of 300,000 Golden Iridians it is completed. (+med ore mine in Carbonna, producing 500 tons of ore), the rates he obtains are 10%, and a very high 15% per six month by the Oraweis bank, some suggest is better if he sells out some of the stock to reduce the capital of the loan or he won't be able to afford the interest.

Tomi Cornog

Tomi gets entangled in a smuggling business during the season undercutting utican merchants in the trade of lahore goods, outside their control and making a good profit on it. (+2,000 golden iridian)

In a mad move tomi begin hunting Nairian raiding ships, the Nairin are masters of fast attack in their light ships, but are surprised by the madman, over five ships are sunk by him, killing the crew and getting their stolen riches, and people. However in the sixth ship as they enter the middle of winter, things don't go as planned. The Nairan manage to do a counter boarding action against tomi, and brutal fight ensue, much of his crew is killed and he lost an eye to the nairian captain before slaying him. Later he would know the man he was fighting was the feared warlord king Carter of the Narek. With him death open warfare starts in northern naira for his lands. (+1,500 golden iridian)(+10 prestige)

Killing a Legend
It was a clear beautiful day out on the sea. I breathed in the salt stained air and smiled. We had just finished off another Narian ship a few hours ago. "Come on lads, sing us a song." I bellowed from the helm of the ship. We sailed and sailed dolphins and sharks following the sound of the ship as it glided through the water. Trickles of sweat came off me from the beating of the sun. A cabin boy brought a lime wedge and I bit into it to fight back the scurvy. It's sour puckering flesh stuck into my death like strings, where I had to wiggle my tongue around like a worm to get them out. Still scrunching my face there came a call.

"Ship, starboard!" I squinted off in the distance and saw a dot on the horizon. Rifling through my pockets I got my spyglass and extended it out with a mute chink of the metal. It was a ship, another Narian raiding ship. A long narrow vessel with just as many oars as masts, it was moving fast, probably fat off its recent raids. It wasn't long before I saw it raise the black flag it knew we were here and wanted a piece of us.

Picking the last remnants of lime pulp out of my gab I commanded "Prepare for battle! Get out the cannons, get out the grappling hooks, the guns, and the swords." I wiped my hands on my tartan while walking to my first mate. "William I want our best shots up in the crow's nest, and keep most of the men below deck in reserve."

"Yes captain," he said an ran off barking orders in his shrill nasally voice. It always makes me always want to punch him but he is a good sailor, and I digress anyway.

It all gets a little dull after that. The raw anticipation and adrenaline rush of looking out and waiting to see who fires their guns first is something that needs to be experienced not told. We sat there waiting, barking orders, and sharpening our close quarters weapons, like my sword Claeiddohm. We huddled up to the railing of the ship and began firing the moment we felt the vibrations of the first cannon fire. Our brigantine was a little larger than the Narian vessel but not enough to have any more advantage than some smaller swivel cannons on the top deck.

Smoke filled the air from the first volleys and we all began to yell at the enemy, and they us. The previous ships we had the advantage of surprise, after all who the fak would attack a Narian vessel? These ones landed onto our deck with loud thuds, and towered over most of us by a at least a foot. I fired a few shots into them and started slashing with my sword while using my pistol as a club, the used gun barrel singeing my hand as I held it.

And so the fighting went for an hour. Most scraps end quickly but those of Naria are of sterner stuff. Had it not been for our previous successes my crew would have broken and surrendered, luckily the high of past victory still lingered. We had forgotten to cover the deck with sand and the blood of the dead caused many to slip. I managed to run into one bloke who was hairier than a bear, and looked meaner. He rushed me with a boarding axe in one hand and a cutlass in another. I can't say how long I fought him, it seemed forever, everything else just stopped existing as I focused on not dying.

He managed to slip in a glancing blow that took out my eye. I would have died crying out in anguish had he not tripped on the blood running across the deck. As more nad more of my men started running out from their hiding places to reinforce us, I simply chunked the pistol at him. The Nairian didn't know how to act and just ducked, which is when I used both hand to slam Claeiddohm into the top of his crown. With his death his men lost moral quickly, and I was safe to stagger back to my cabin for the ship doctor and a stiff ale. It wasn't until I bragged at a Kaldosia port did a contact of mine explain that it was the dread Warlord King Carter of the Narek.

Bundle stack of letters arrive to the regent and minister offices:

To: Regent Liane Gesila le Oraweis
I bid you my most gratious salutations, regent le Oraweis. I write you with utmost apprehension, for this letter bring you bad news. The Imperial Railroad is bankrupt, truth is the line is pointless, meanwhile it reduce the time to go to the other side of the island....not enough nobles use the mechanical apparatus to do so or coover the cost of running daily once to it. We currently are 150,000 Golden Iridians into debt with the Central Imperial Bank.

I did not dare to write you before i could make a conclussive report, but i find no way to maintain the railroad alive. Even if my suggestion is not welcome, may be possible to bid off the railroad in an attemp to make some money and pay off the debt? on the contrary the railroad will be seized by the Bank. It was the dream of the emperor and mine we could see lines everywhere, but reality is harsh, and the line was not done in the best spot, maybe if you my most beloved regent would allow private enterprise in the lines it would be possible the dream to still happen.

To: Finance Minister
The rebellion have been finally been destroyed, yet it came to a great cost to our lands. The city of Kuril is devastated, tens of thousands are death and hundreds of thousand homeless, the ports, the merchant sectors all burned down. We need to rebuild the city for the people, so to eliminate any republican love still remaining...yet the cost stagger me, our own estimates point to near five million golden Iridian for reconstruction of the port, merchant areas, reimbursing the damage and property lost during the rebels tirade!. Even then we need to invest near two million golden Iridians to begin rebuilding part of the housing sectors for the population...We beg the goverment to help the loyal subjects of the empire!

Signed by:
Intereim Mayor of Kuril, Merchant Master Marios Mercks.

To: Lord Field Marshall
The fort of Isol was demolished during the rebellion, meanwhile rain fort have received considerable damages. We believe we should rebuild such defenses against the Nairians, however i cannot deny it will be costly, our estimates are around 300,000 Golden Iridians to do so. Please consider it.

Colonel Kaster du Meran.

A Fair Trade

Now Located on a remote island, Alison began to move onto stage 2 of her plan of establishing a pirate kingdom. The was a small hindrance in her plans however, and many people were after her. While she wanted to groom Meria into an heir, she decided it was best to get her back to Iridia City. However, she could not step foot there without being arrested, so she came up with a solution.

At dawn a ship approached, the Sweet Morgan, belonging to independent mercenary Tomi Cornog. With a nod, Princess Meria was given accommodations on the ship, which was to transport her to Iridia City.

Tomi Cornog of course accepted the offer, how could he not? The coin from delivering the princess safely, the prestige, and being owed a favor by the Pirate Queen. He didn't even need to smuggle the princess in, just make port and contact the authorities. To ensure all went well he allowed the princess to his quarters while he slept with the men. No one wants to bring back a beloved princess and have her get you arrested after all.

A mugshot of Williams from his days as a common thug. Oddly, the year is dated to 202, while it would more likely be 204 or 205

Name: James Williams

Age: 27 (b. 185)

Personality Traits: Clever,

Property: Leads roughly 50 gang members of the “Blackscarves,” “owns” a section of Hemmington Avenue, Iridia City, and a few surrounding blocks of slums

Biography: James Williams, like many of his criminal companions, was born dirt poor. Although James entered the world with the luxury of belonging to a somewhat stable home environment, his father’s untimely death in a wagon accident shattered his fragile home life. His mother quickly turned to drink, and James, while at first seeking more legal ways to make money quickly fell into a group of juvenile street urchins, who stole from shops and robbed lone travellers to feed themselves and their families. As James grew, so did the severity of his crimes. He first killed a man at age 15 in a street fight with a rival gang, while serving under the notorious Maurice “Wild-Eyes” Holger. Upon the stabbing death of Holger as a part of a larger turf war, a power vacuum was created and the underlings of Holger broke apart and began to fight for control. After 6 years of brutal warfare, a clique led by Williams came out on top, and reunited the remnants of Holger’s gang by force.

Now, at the seniority-granting age of 27 (most gangsters make 25 if they’re lucky), James heads a medium-size gang known as the Blackscarves for their trademark black cloth face coverings that they use while committing crimes. James himself is known for what could be considered a “brutal intelligence,” as Williams cannot read or write but has outsmarted other gangs and the police on multiple occasions.

((I hereby resign from playing Heliodorus Caldwell and I await Alex to give me a second trait.

Greetings, Lord Field Marshal, as you know there are a great deal of soldiers who will likely become out of a job soon enough. No doubt you have heard of the formation of the New World Trading Company. The New World is likely a perilous place, requiring men who are able to protect themselves and their families. Permit me Lord Field Marshal, 200 of our Kusma veterans to settle in the New World along with 5 pieces of cannon to act as a ward against suspicious actors.

Sincerely, Colonel Christopher Frost

My Regent, I expect you to have heard of my attempt to form a New World Trading Company by now. I act and have acted in the best interests of the Empire, and thus it is only fit that I should request your blessings. Permit me to act as a Proprietor of any lands claimed and settled in the name of the Empire; to govern them as best they should.

Sincerely, Earl of Brestershire Christopher Frost

Christopher Frost, Earl of Brestershire,

Your New World Trading Company is a most ambitious endeavour, and the Empire greatly appreciates your efforts to better it. For the lands your company is able to claim and settle, you may govern them in the name of the Empire, as a matter of expediency. However, your desire to act as Proprietor of any lands claimed and settled in the name of the Empire is quite beyond reason. Other individuals or companies may embark upon enterprises in the name of the Empire, and I see no reason to place such theoretical individuals under your governance.

May your endeavors be fruitful and beneficial for the Empire.

-Lady Regent Liane Gesila le Oraweis, Duchess of Novers

To the Colonel Frost

For your actions in the war, you are granted permission to enlist them in your brave company, as long as the men are forever loyal to his imperial majesty.

Lord Field Marshal Neville

A Proposition

“This here is the Emiliano Rifle. Unlike any other in the world, it possesses the capacity to reload without the use of a ramrod or a percussion cap”

Frost holds up a bullet while holding the rifle

“Now this enables the user to simply pull back the bolt, load in the bullet and push the bolt forward. At that point they would be ready to fire.”

Frost hands the rifle to an assistant

“The man next to me is a veteran of Kusma, and one of the finest soldiers I’ve known. He should be the one to tell you how much of an improvement it is.”

“With those muzzle loaders anyone one of us could only get off around 3 rounds a minute at best. But this, this, can get off at least 6 or more depending of how fast you can load the rifle.”

“Give them a demonstration if you will.”

The assistant aims, and fires with a noticeable lack of smoke emanating from the barrel

A woman watches from the back of the crowd, interested in the demonstration going on before her. The woman didn’t look terribly wealthy, as she was dressed like an average middle class Iridian Citizen, however, when she spoke, she spoke with an accent that sounded rather

Mivean. Her hair was brown and long and her red dress was cheap. She wore a rather expensive looking necklace inscribed with the letters “GM”

“These will become available as soon as a reliable manufacturing contract can be secured. I hold no doubt this rifle prove pivotal in what is to come in the New World.”

After the demonstration finished, the woman approached Frost.

“These rifles, you are looking for a manufacturer for them, no?” She asked, with a distinct accent. .

Whoever this woman was, she didn’t look like she had the kind of contacts he was looking for. Some sort of red dress that looked like it came straight out of Carbona. The necklace was peculiar which made it possible that this was a disguise of a sort. Who would want to miss the World’s Fair after all?

“Yes my Lady, they are under no large scale production. These few rifles here are from some local gunsmiths in Romel. Are you from any of the Mivean Cities if I may ask? You have a quite ...pronounceable accent.”

“Oui” She responded. “Mir. I haven’t been back there in years I’m afraid.” The Woman looked rather lost in thought, however regained consciousness of her surroundings. “My Brother….. was a firearms collector, had many antiques from around Zalsar. He taught me everything I know about them. These new firearms, are quite amazing. I just have to know more about them. Please forgive me if I am being rude..”

“You have no need to beg my pardon my Lady; on the technical details of the rifle I cannot elaborate. I am unfamiliar in the specifics of the craft. I ordered the professors at the University to create such a design, and yet they claim the originality.” Was… Does that not imply he has left the land of the living? Why would his sister be interested in the same craft as him, if that brought about such painful memories?

“I’m surprised that the Empire hasn’t funded this endeavor yet. I would think that they would want to expand the military’s might, even after the defeat of the rebellion. Seeing that competition in the new world is very profitable at the moment, and new discoveries will be very coveted. A new arms race is upon us, and whomever can grab the most land will be considered very powerful. Geo-Political affairs are very confusing sometimes, no?

“The Empire has not offered to even a field trial of the rifle yet. Although in the New World it may have a trial of its own. As long as the navy can manage to secure the seas against piracy, then the situation in the New World will become drastically simplified.”

“Piracy is a growing problem in the New World, but most pirates care about two things, booze and whores, if you’ll excuse my language m’lord.”

“Of course they do, even though some may have other, ulterior, motivations.”

“Everyone has ulterior motivations m’lord. You have to learn to accept that fact in order to be successful in life.”

“You seem to be steering this conversation my Lady; to be as forward with you as I can: What is it you seek?”

“I seek revenge. I seek to see those who have wronged me have their heads put on a spike and put atop a hill for all to view.” She seems to be getting aggresive, but still spoke in a calm voice. “I seek peace with myself knowing that sometimes, the end justifies the means. And finally, I seek what is mine.” She paused for a moment. “I am sorry m’lord, I sometimes let my emotions get the best of me.”

A look of genuine discomfort crossed onto Frost’s face before he managed to recoil. “A walk if you may my Lady.” Offering his arm to this apparent...wraith? Spectre?

“Thank You, m’lord.” allowing Frost to take her arm.

He led her outside of the Fair building an onto one of the side paths following around the building.

“I think it would be foolish of me to not assume you wish to intend me upon a purpose. Something that only I possess or I am one of the more accessibles you are looking for.”

“Oui,” She responded “I might also have something you might want” she said, nodding at a flyer they passed by advertising Colonel Frost’s “New World Trade Company”. “You have a wonderful idea. I might have some…. resources you might like.”

“Resources? There is almost no possible way to verify that my Lady if you imply what we’ve already discussed. I am willing to hear you regardless.”

“You surely haven’t worked out who I am by now?”

“There are ears and eyes everywhere my Lady.”

“Thankfully, most of them work for me.” She responded “I have secured a small island in the new world, an excellent place to build a trade port, however lacks most resources other than it be a decent location to grow sugar and possibly other… more exotic crops.”

“Why should I have reason to trust you? There is obviously something here that benefits you.”

“You don’t have a reason to trust me, but you have many competitors in the shipping market. wouldn’t it nice if their stock prices go down while yours goes up, and suddenly, you’re now richer than the Lady Regent? You don’t have to trust me, but I advise that you do.”

“Richer than the Lady Regent? Impossible. At the least you have met a man of honor who would not dare capture a declared enemy on a field lacking banners.”

“M’lord, yes you are an honorable man. My cause is honorable, against a man is without honor. You have no reason to trust me, but I know several of your competitors will.”

“Competitors? The Empire has accrued a notable disinterest in the New World. My Company is currently the only one of its type that exists.”

“Do you think the other nations of the world won’t form their own? I think many would love to have my help.”

“Given your hatred of the current state of the Miveans and the sheer distance from Utica to the New World that is rather unlikely. Doing so gets you nowhere. Before any arrangements can be made trust must be established. I have already upheld my part by your standing here.”

“You have, and that is more than I would ask.” The Woman paused “I think we both know what I want, and I want your help to get it. I also want a base of operations for my business. This is all I ask.”

“Would you act against the Empire? I cannot in good conscience act against the Empire I have served. I am also required to not constrict existing trade. The harboring of questionable individuals would surely draw the ire of the Regent.”

“You have my word that I will not ask you to act against your own countrymen, and while I am based on the Island, I will not interrupt trade within or to the empire.”

“The island would be at best a watering point for ships making a journey back to Iridia from the New World. I should agree to your terms provided if raids on Imperial shipping cease altogether.”

“Raids on Imperial Shipping with cease. You have my word.”

“Then I must be urged to accept.”

“Then it is settled. I shall be in contact with you soon, but for now, I bid you adieu.” She started walking away from Colonel Frost. “Aurum et Sanguis.” she said, as she walked away.
