The Early Days of the Fortress Port of New Orleans
-----------
Part Three: Earning the Name Fortress
Author's Note: this part is three weeks prior to part two, when only New Orleans is held by Cooper
"Sir, we have a situation" the Captain stated right after saluting the Admiral.
"And what would that be, officer?" Dave Cooper replied.
"Sir, the towns in the triangle of Morgan City, Raceland and Port Sulfur have banded together to form the Morgan Empire. And they claim New Orleans. Intel says they outnumber our army 3 to 1, but have no navy.
"Dammit." Cooper muttered. "We have the bayous and the river on our side, but that may not be enough." He turned to the office: "Get me Perkins"
As Perkins walked in, Cooper told him his plan.
Three hours later
"Emperor, I have great news!" the spy exclaimed as he entered.
"Well, be quick about it boy," snapped the emperor.
"New Orleans blockaded the river, but missed one vital ford. We must move quickly to exploit this weakness!"
"Great work boy! We will move quickly to exploit this," the emperor exclaimed as the spy saluted and left. The spy walked towards the edge of camp, checking to see if anyone was watching. Once satisfied he was not being observed, he seemed to melt away, heading back to New Orleans, his mission accomplished.
That night, at the ford.
The Morganian empire's army slowly snaked its way through the forest, exhausted from their trek through the bayous. Satisified everything was on the level, the emperor gave the signal to mice across the river. Everything went fine until about 1/3 the army was on the opposite bank, 1/3 crossing, and the rest on the close bank. Then, torches lit up all around, boats came in from up and down the river, and gun shots came from the woods. At the command post, Cooper smiled. The boats were firing on the men in the river, wreaking havoc on their forces; the men on both banks were firing on the torches, not knowing his men were in the trees; and men were dropping like flies to his sharpshooters. The Morganese empire was no more.

That's all for now. Maybe some more at a later date.
