Avanti Italia?

War brews across the Italian peninsula, as the Kingdom of Italy faces off against the powers of Sardinia-Piedmont, Austria and France. The self proclaimed Kingdom of Italy(formerly the Kingdom of Two Sicilies) strives to unify the Italian people under one banner. Whilst the Sardinians, Austrians and French seek to hold onto the status quo. As tensions heat up, both sides attempt to gain leverage over the other in Italy.

The King of Sardinia Piedmont immediately sends out the call for 10,000 men, and he is enthusiastically met by his people who flock to him in droves, and the recruitment number is a more pleasing 20,000, instead of the original 10,000. [-14,000 SP₤, +20,000 Regulars to Sardinia-Piedmont]

Sardinian propaganda causes widespread anger at the actions of the Ferdinand, King of the Two Sicilies. Much of Northern Italy turns against him and his warmongering ways. [-1,000 SP₤, Northern Italy supports Sardinia-Piedmont and stands against the former Kingdom of the Two Sicilies]

Austrian attempts to fund rebels are stymied by the stalwart commitment to unification of the Southern Italian people. The funds are then diverted to the Papal Army, which had been swelled by the faithful from around the world, leaving them better equipped to fight off any Italian attempts at unification. [-40,000 Ausƒ, Papal troops better equipped, 35,000 strong Papal Army]

Papal Soldiers

Calls by Ferdinand I for more Italians to rise against the traitors and invaders go awry as the people are somewhat sick of his firebrand rhetoric, as were the soldiers his agents attempted to enticed to desert from the army of Sardinia Piedmont.[-10,000 TS₤, More Italians favor peaceful unification]

Throughout the Italian regions of the Austrian Empire, reports of widespread revolt are overblown, as there seems to be no revolts anywhere. Still, someone seems to have setup a widespread spy network in Austrian controlled Italy.

Attempts to train the Italian Army are more successful, with new tactics and training in the new arms bought from abroad and the military ways being taught to the soldiers increases their combat effectiveness. [-42,000 TS₤, +1 Army level]

For the actual beginning of the war itself, the self proclaimed Kingdom of Italy struck first blood. 80,000 men set sail from Napoli, on transports protected a large war fleet, certainly not of it’s own navy. The Italian navy was actually blockading the Adriatic, but not doing a very good job of it. [Austria partially blockaded.]

The fleet split into two smaller squadrons, still each being extremely formidable. The first landed on the coast of Latium and disgorged some 30,000 troops to topple the Papal States whilst the second continued up the coast and landed the remaining 50,000 men in Tuscany. The fleet then disappeared off the coast of Italy, leaving the Italians to whatever may come.

The landing of the first army and their subsequent march towards Rome utterly surprised the Papal forces, who struggled to get organized enough to turn and face the new threat. Had the Italians attacked early in the day, they would have crushed the disorganized Papal Army, but alas they did not seize the day.

The Papal Army, now ready to fight, took strong defensive positions outside of Rome, blocking the Italians passage into Rome proper. The Italian commander, recognizing the strong defensive position held by the Papal forces and that his own forces were awkwardly trapped against the coast by the larger Papal forces, deftly maneuvered his forces north then east around Rome whilst distracting the Papal forces with small scale attacks and skirmishes. [-3,000 Regulars to Kingdom of Italy, -2,000 Regulars to Papal States]

Before the Pope knew it, the Italians had moved from the west to the east of Rome with direct access to further reinforcements from the South. The Pope, reluctant to leave Rome, simply watched on as much of his territory was captured by the Italians, who captured all areas of the Papacy except Romanga, Latium and a small corridor that connected both provinces.

In the meantime, the 2nd Italian Army had made short work of the Tuscan army, quickly capturing the entire Grand Duchy. Lucca was next to fall, and they did not even put up a fight. The Italian commander who was preparing to move against Modena and Parma, then received shocking news. Parma, Modena and the Tuscan enclave of Pontremoli had been peacefully annexed by Sardinia-Piedmont. [-5,000 Regulars to the Kingdom of Italy, Sardinia-Piedmont annexes Parma, Modena and Pontremoli]

After being counseled by his officers, the Italian commander decided to await reinforcements from the South and plan his next actions.

Following the opening moves of the Italian War of Unification, the New Italian Kingdom has gained much territory, whilst losing some support among Italians. The Sardinians have gained much support amongst the people and some land, but are still not ready to face the Italians(Sicilians) alone.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland demands that any and all Foreign Powers remain neutral in the conflict within the Italian Peninsula. Any attempts by nations outside of Italy to intervene in this conflict will receive the full wrath of the United Kingdom. Her Majesty's Government has been instructed to warn any and all who would attempt to see their way done in Italy to let this issue resolve itself, as it is an internal affair for the Italian Nation to handle itself. Any moves by the Austrian or French Empires towards aggression to Sardinia-Piedmont and the Kingdom of Italy will be met by Her Majesty's Government reviewing and possible changing her current peaceful state.

This has been a message from Her Majesty's Government.

The Papal States
May all those serving under the flag of the treacherous Fredinand II of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies be declared an anathema if they do not lay down their arms. Furthermore, we call on all faithful Catholics to come to the aid of the church in its hour of need.

We also question the actions of Great Britain and wonder why the Austrians are being chastised when they are subject to a Sicilian blockade brought on by the King of Two Sicilies, is the Austrian Empire not allowed to defend itself or does the Queen believe in the subjugation of all Catholics?
[Sicilian Troops fighting against the Papal States demoralized, -10,000 regulars for Two Sicilies, +15,000 regulars to the Papal States - potentially more if pledged by PCs]

OOC: The troops fighting against the pope have been placed under Papal Interdict, ie they are being denied the sacraments.

The Kingdom of Prussia

The Kingdom of Prussia hereby grants full paid leave to any Catholic soldiers or officers who may wish to join the Papal Armies for the duration of the conflict in Italy. Should they fall in the Italian conflict, the Kingdom guarantees full survivors' benefits and pensions to their families. Any loyal Catholic citizen who wishes to take up arms on behalf of the Papal States is also free to do so and, should he fall in battle, his family shall also receive survivors' benefits as though he had served as a conscript in one of the Kingdom's wars.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland further issues the demand that the Kingdom of Two Sicilies ends it's blockade of the Austrian Empire, which we did not know about at first, as our advisers failed to mention that in the report.

This has been a message from Her Majesty's Government.

OOC: I read this at like 1:30 in the morning, I completely missed the part about the blockade :p

At the current state of affairs, the Kingdom of Bavaria does not wish to take sides on the conflict on the Italian Peninsula. While we believe that the King of the two sicilies will bring more suffering upon his people then necessary, there is no need for our armed forces to involve themselves, should our austrian allies not require us.
Be warned though, that if the war reaches Lombardo-Venetia, or continues to rage even further within the Austrian Empire, we will reconsider our position.

Holy Father, forgive me, for I have sinned grievously against you. My faith is strong, but my passion to see Italia unified is as strong. I do not want more bloodshed between us, I am your humble servant in the faith. Let us reconcile and open dialogue about the possibilities of ending our conflict.

~ Ferdinand I, King of Italy

We have no need to involve ourselves in the affairs of the Pope of Rome currently nor the Italian feud taking place. Russian opinion is that the blockade should be lifted and that the Italians should solve their own problems amongst themselves. They are only fighting on their own lands. Though it is our hope that as little bloodshed as is required happens there should be no external involvement. If it proves the will of the people to unify then let it be done, if it proves their will to stay apart then let that take place.

The Kingdom of Denmark will now authorize the same for our Catholic soldiers, officers, and civilians.

The Austrian Empire

We are not amused at these actions by the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. They have invaded their neighbours without a declaration of war, and have initiated a blockade of our coast. As we had guaranteed the independence of those states, we hereby formally Declare War upon the bellicose Two Sicilies and their insane monarch, though as we are already de facto at war this is unlikely to change the facts on the ground. We call upon our allies of France and Sardinia-Piedmont to do the same. This cannot be tolerated. The goals of the Austrian Empire against the Two Sicilies will be to free the occupied territories from Sicilian control and the dethroning of the mad Sicilian king.

To the Pope, we the faithful shall defend you.

To the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland: So, you want to destroy the Balance of Power established in the Congress of Vienna? Because that is what you are currently doing with your support of the mad Sicilians. You are supporting a bloodthirsty aggressor. We are the defenders, and only support our allies. You, on the other hand, seem to be supporting the mad Sicilians who are responsible for this mess. We ask of you to not involve yourself in the conflict in the Italian peninsula, as it is not relevant to you. While you might not trust us, we will still say this: We do not intend to change the borders of the Two Sicilies, merely to liberate the occupied territories and depose the mad monarch.

The Kingdom of The French

It is clear to all Frenchmen that the acts of the mad Italian King were not at all aiming at creating peace, unity or balance. He sought to plunge Europe into a mad war of the giants, so that he may feast upon the corpses of the collapsed Empires. We must not let his wish become true; it has been clearly stated by both France and Austria that any actions in the Italian Peninsula will be met with a declaration of war. We trust upon our Catholic brothers in Italy to remain strong, and remain militant and to throw off the shackles of oppression that the Sardinian Madman is trying to impose upon the states of the Italian Peninsula. We hereby abide to the articles of the Italian Peace Treaty, and would like to announce that the Kingdom of France and the false Kingdom of Sicily are now in a state of war.

This Franco-Austrian alliance is exactly the mess that Russia cannot tolerate. Italy is turning into a European war precisely because the smaller part act before debating with the greater. If Austria was so concerned they should have discussed the issue with the Powers rather then instantly act over an Italian feud war. French diplomatic resurgence is very dangerous and we will not risk another round of war and invasion by Paris and her ambitions. This aggressive policy by some will lead us to acting.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland is hereby announcing that the British Royal Navy shall be placed on high alert, any and all attacks against the United Kingdom will be met with a declaration of War. We echo the views of the Russian Empire, we shall not allow the French to act in a new highly aggressive fashion. We ask the French to back down immediately.

This has been a message from Her Majesty's Government.

The Austrian Empire

We do not understand where Russia is coming from. Has Russa not payed attention to the goings-on on the international stage for the last decades? Or even centuries? We, as faithful catholics, will not tolerate an attack on our spiritual leader. Furthermore, we were attacked by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, an attack that was entirely unprovoked. We do not understand this support for a bloodthirsty warmongerer. Furthermore, we would like to inform the Russian Emperor of the fact that the Italian peninsula is not a concern of Russia, but wholly a concern of Austria, as it falls within those areas which we should naturally be concerned with.

Also, a fact that might have passed you by: What you call a Franco-Austrian alliance solely concerns the Italian peninsula, and nowhere else, nor in any other situation than a war in the Italian peninsula. We do not understand why the upholding of the Status Quo is such a concern to Russia, as in all other areas France and Austria do not cooperate at all.

I, and the Chilean nation, stand as devout Catholics. We are shocked at the actions of King Ferdinand IV of the Sicilies. All devout Catholics who wish to fight in Italy will be allowed to do so, as long as they fight for the Pope and none other

The United Mexican states support the moves of Austria. This so called king of Italy has aggressively attacked many of his peaceful neighbours and so must be stopped before he can cause even more chaos and destruction to the region. This is a regional matter which should be solved by the local great powers Austria and France to preserve what can be salvaged of the regional balance of power.

The Federal Republic of Central America encourages any citizen in our great nation outraged by the actions of Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to go to Italy and fight the mad beast.
