Thanks a lot for the figures. Along with the announcement dates and release dates of your games they could give a very interesting insight on how PI grew :)

This reminds me of the time, all those years ago, when I first saw Europa Universalis on the shelf of my local EB Games, and thought "Nah, that looks lame". If only I had bought it, and discovered my love of Paradox sooner. I might have been part of more of that history.

When it comes to remembering....
My first contact with Paradox was also thanks to EU1. It was as free gift when you purchased certain gaming magazine. But that month was promised another game, which was somehow delayed, so they gave EU1 instead. I remember how disapointed I was at first. I was looking forward to the other one and when I wasn't able to even finish the tutorial, I almost gave up. Luckily I like challange, so I pushed on and when the next month came and I could get the previously promised game, I didn't even do it :)

Interesting.

These statistics fit quite well the function
c*exp(l*(x-s))
where x is the current year, and the fit parameters are c~=47.0898, l~=0.352223, s~=1986.44:
shpx

i.e. exponential growth. The time it takes for doubling the number of members is about 2 years.

edit: Oh, I think this is my 1000th post! Woohoo!

I remember reading a review on EU I. I played mainly RPGs and RTSs at the time, and when I saw the scope of the game I wondered "what weirdos would play a sim' this complex and abstract?"

10 years later... Well... :D

It used to be a year :)

Well, yes, in the early days the growth was quicker, but there the exponential fit fails anyway.

The function gives a doubling time in years of ln(2)/l~=1.96792.

Woah, the increase between 2001 and 2002 was pretty huge. What was released that year? EU II?

I discovered the Paradox forum only in 2005... A year earlier, i was just a PhD student, only buying very low cost games. When, on the shelf of my supermarket, i saw EUII (5-10 euros i think) and saw the map, reminded me of Robin Hood, Defender of the Crown, the old version i used to play on my old Mac computer 20 years earlier... so i decided to give it a try. Got completely hooked. While roaming through the Web looking for solutions to bugs, i discovered the forum - user 43919 - , and been there since :p

Doubling every two years - sounds like Moore's law:cool:

Maybe we should call it Johan's law and look forward to every living person on the planet being registered on the Paradox forums by 2026!
