That's the previous thread, I thought the issue was fixed but soon after I wrote that it was resolved it started again. I just uninstalled the game and haven't touched it since.

I'm trying it again, and the issue persists. Here's an updated dxdiag attached,

The driver I have installed via the nvidia app is v 23.21.13.9135 released 23/03/2018

However on nvidia's site:

There's a driver listed as

391.35 WHQL

released 2018.3.27

I'm going to try that now.

Thanks in advance for any help - this is one of my favourite games, I've got hundreds of hours logged and I haven't been able to play it for a long time. It worked perfectly up until the issue initially presented itself.

Edit I : I installed the driver via nvidia's site and it's the same one, the version/date hasn't changed. I restarted and still the lag persists. It's apparent even on the main menu without clicking everything. All graphics options have been reduced as low as possible/turned off.

I am going to start going back and testing each previous version of EUIV.

Edit II, III, IV:

I'm trying the previous versions available on Steam

Stutters are roughly 1 second apart

Latest 1.31.5 - Persists
1.31.4 Persists

1.31.3 Persists
1.31.2 Persists
1.31.1 Persists
1.31.0 Drops after 10s, movement brings it back.
1.30.6 Persists
1.30.5 Persists
1.30.4 Persists
1.30.3 Persists
1.29.6 Drops after 11 seconds/stutters alt tab and bacl in without zooming, starts again for
11 seconds, zooming out starts it again, of note, this patch has less vassals for france
1.28.3 OLD launcher, Appears to be resolved - launcher must be the problem
restarting and trying again stutter for 3 seconds

1.27.2 Persists, constant

After finishing with 1.27.2, I selected 1.28.3 and verified integrity of game files, 2 files had
to be reinstalled.

Rolling back to 1.28.3, no lag, even after alt tabbing. Verifying game files might have helped.

Going to try launching via .exe instead of through steam/launcher.

In the linked post I found that 1.25.1 helped the problem, but I can not select it in the steam "betas" section. How can I install this version ?

I have a feeling that it might be something to do with the launcher or something ? The launcher is very slow compared to the old one. Is there any way I can revert to the old launcher ? Thanks.

Edit V:

Edit: I knew the damn launcher was the problem - launched from .exe with the latest version, no lag.

This legend had the idea first

The main menu says all my owed dlc is enabled.

Anyone know if I can play the MEIOU&T mod by launching from the .exe without the launcher ?

I know it seems like it but the launcher cannot be the problem, as when the game starts it gets completely unloaded.

Not all old versions are still available, as Steam restrict how many betas a game can have.

Other reports I've seen say that the 1.3.1x patches are slower than the 1.30.x patches, and that 1.31.x will not load the DLCs when run from eu4.exe

Thanks for the info, should I try using the launcher but disabling all DLC to see if they're the issue ?

I'm currently running 1.29.6 through steam by starting the game via the launcher first to ensure DLC & mods are running/selected, then running the .exe to play the game without the lag/stuttering.

It seems to be working fine now.

Edit I : I did as I said above, launching 1.29.6 with the MEIOU&T mod. From the main menu it says all of my owned DLC is enabled. Running a test game, the treaty of Tordesillas event fired, which I assume means the El Dorado DLC is enabled. Therefore I assume all other DLC listed on the main menu are enabled too.

You said

"1.31.x will not load the DLCs when run from eu4.exe"

so I'm good using this method on any version prior, e.g. 1.29.6 ?

This will do for now, as I only play EUIV with the MEIOU&T submod, and it's only compatible with version 1.29.6.

Still, I wonder what the issue is.

Thanks for the help.

Edit II :

The lag is back with v 1.29.6, not sure what happened. I'm not running any other programs while the game is running. No other games that I own have this issue.

I've seen that happen when Windows is downloading some large update in the background. If you run Update app does it find anything to apply? If so do that and reboot.

When you say "no other games" does that including our similar games like CK2?

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/EU4/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/EU4/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log .

Hello again, I thought I'd try and get EUIV working again, should I make a new post, or is this one alright ?

Yes, I can play CK2 without stuttering.

The stuttering issue persists with the latest version of EUIV, and it's a fresh install.

Is there anything else you can think I can try ? As I've stated before, I have 1500+ hours in EUIV, the game never had this issue until my initial post. To my mind it coincided with the new launcher, but I can't be sure.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Edit: It appears, as before, that I can stop the stuttering by launching EUIV.exe directly from the folder, not using Steam, and this stops the stuttering. I also can enable/disable DLC by launching through Steam with the selection I want, closing the game, and launching the .exe directly. I am going to try this with mods, and run it longer than the five minutes I have tested it with.

Does that prevent the DLCs from loading? If so, you could see if those are what's doing it by disabling them all in Steam then run the game from Steam.

When the game loads the launcher is unloaded, so it can't be doing this directly. The only interaction there could be the Game Settings in te launcher, and as yu can see there are only a few and the are the same as you get when running eu4.exe anyway.

Can I et a new dxdiag please.

Sure, thanks for the quick reply. So far I've been playing the mod MEIOU&T Version 2.60.03 on EUIV Version 1.29.6 without stuttering or issues. I load the mod using Steam and the launcher, quit, and then run EUIV.exe directly.

When I launch it through Steam, there appears to be an update that tried to download for EUIV through Steam, but the progress bar finishes in half a second, and I can't see the file size or anything. It jumps back down to the scheduled section.

Edit II: launching the .exe directly does not prevent DLC from loading.

It will eventually :D

the game never had this issue until my initial post.
But back then you said:
That's the previous thread, I thought the issue was fixed but soon after I wrote that it was resolved it started again.
So it went back to Oct 2020 at least, apparently.

You also said then:
I currently have EUIV set up using version 1.29.6 for use with the MEIOU&T submod, though the problem persists without any mods.
But now you say
I've been playing the mod MEIOU&T Version 2.60.03 on EUIV Version 1.29.6 without stuttering or issues.
So it came, then went, then came again? Something like that?

From that dxdiag I'd normally get you to update the nVidia driver but I see there have been none in the > 5 years since ... do you have access to any other computer to see if you et this too? Preferably one with newer hardware!
