Last week I eventually decided to buy EU, 'cause I had read extremely good reviews on the game, and I was very excited by the games features.
Unfortunately I realised pretty soon that I was geting into trouble:
At the end of the installation, I read the readme file, and I discovered that I needed "winsock 2.0". I found it on the CD, but when I tried to launch it, an error message appeared.
I tried to launch the game, hoping that there would be no problem whatsoever.
What happened then is that the game froze in the middle of the initialization process ("initializing sounds"). Then I downloaded 1.09 patch, and tried to launch the game with the "nomusic" icon. But I still heard the music during the intro and the game still froze.
Any suggestion to help me?
My system:
Intel Pentium III 450Mhz
128 Mo SDRam
Windows 98
Graphics card: Graphics Blaster RIVA 128ZX

Running with the "no music" option does not mean that the intro sequences are supposed to run without music. They're separate avi-files that generate music whether you like it or not. However, about your game freezing up, how long are you waiting until you decide to push the restart button? It takes about 10-20 seconds for my game to initialize (it kind of looks like a freeze but it ain't) and I run on a much faster machine, Athlon 850Mhz.

I have more or less the same problem.... game starts loading and freezes up altogether (I have emailed tech support, since there is no answer at the tech support # (I get a msg telling me to call back during biz hours, and it IS during biz hours (growl)))... I upgraded to 1.09 and now I get an app window (SafeDisk<tm<) and THEN it freezes (hey it's one step further in :) )... any help would be appreciated, and if tech solves it for me, I'll post it here

I can tell you the game really freezes up!!! Anyway what you told me kinda worried me: how can this game possibly work on my machine if it takes so much time to launch with a 800Mhz processor!? About the nomusic icon, I had already guessed that the intro worked separately.
Thanks anyway.
You can keep on sending your suggestions cause I'm looking for the answer to that "initializing sounds" problem, but I'm really clueless.

hi

try and do the following plz...

1) there is a thread on this forum about EU trouble shooting. i would take a look at it

2) uninstall game, kill all apps running in theb ackground, defrag your HD, update your drivers, reinstall directx8.0a, reinstall the game.

see if this work and keep me posted

regards

I called the number listed on the penultimate page of the manual, in a 514 area code.... it is surrounded by SF info, so I ASSUME (and we know what happens then) that it's for SF.... still getting a multilingual msg to go away and come back at the appointed time

The constant freezes are a huge problem. Personally, I have done everything sort of bury a dead cat at midnight during a new moon, and I'll be durned if I get the game to play with any stability on my main PC (Dell, PIII/866, Windows ME, 256MB RAM, 64MB DDR NVidia GeForce 2, lots of free hard drive space). Thanks to the forums, I was (hooray!) able to get it to save w/o crashing, but the random crashes (sometimes freezes, sometimes exits to the desktop) continue.

Now, I can live with the occasional crash, but these are beyond occasional, and they significantly impair my ability to enjoy the game. That is a real shame because, when I can play, EU is such extraordinary fun...so fun that I wish I could play more. These problems also cause me to be really scared about buying EU2 and even other Strategy First games (like Cossacks).

the reason you get this message about " try again during buis hours" is that sometimes am not at my desk and answering an in house tech call. plz be patient and keep trying. i cant be at 2 places at once. same applies for my partner in tech support at SF

and yes SF publish the game and dont produce it.
