Summary

Freeze and crash when saving on Steam deck

Description

This has been a constant problem sincei bought the game (V1.6) and is still happening. While the game is saving, whether autosave or manual save, the game freezes and causes the steam deck to restart or to not respond and I have to force restart it.

This does not happen every save attempt but frequent enough on some days to make the game unplayable.

It is not a temperature issue as I have checked the last cpu and gpu temperature readings before a crash and they are always between 60-80 degrees (Celsius).

I do not have any mods and I am running the games on the lowest settings. The steam deck is not connected to any peripherals.

Steps to reproduce

1. Save the game or let the game autosave

The only supported distro is Ubuntu, so there may be limits on how much we can help you here.

That said, 80c is IME exactly when such problems tend to start. In our launcher's Game Settings menu, turn Vsync off and cap the refresh rate as 60 - is that any better?

Also, crashes on saving can be running out of available memory. How much physical and virtual memory (swap file) do you have?

I have to admit my days of being halfway tech savvy ended more than 10 years ago and now I am completely out of the loop. I did not even know virtual memory existed and I have no clue about linux as an operating system. I will just share all the data I have, in case it helps make things on the steam deck better in the future. I assume I'm not the only one who plays the game on the deck.

V-sync was one of the first things I switched off to try and get better performance. I have every single graphic setting on the lowest possible or off (if it can be switched off). The game is set to have a max of 60 fps from the steam settings.

Here is the performance overlay when the game is running normal

And here are 3 screenshots from the frozen game right before the deck restarts

The temperatures seem to only be 10 degrees hotter, I'm not sure if that's the significant issue here. Is the game eating up too much RAM? 13.8 when running normal is already most of the 15 GB ad maybe it ramping up to 14+ is why it shuts down?

Would trying to play around with the scaling option on the deck help? is dropping the frame limit further to 30 fps or so worth it?

I also just realised I had half rate shading on in the deck's settings.

If there are any more data/information that I can provide from my end please let me know.

Thank you

Hotter than what, sorry? But as you are getting temps of near 80c at 60 fps or lower, I believe you have a cooling problem.

That could also be the case, which draws our attention back to the swap/paging file matter. Sounds like you'll need to talk to Steam deck support on this; under Windows we seem to need at least 32gb, which in turn means you need that much free disk space for it.

Good luck!
