I'm playing VV, wich I got from Gamers Gate.(v 2.1)
The game has always crashed but it usually helped to go back to an earlier save game and start from there.
The reasons for the crashes seems to be many; it might happen when I click on a specific character info, or on a province or for no reason at all.
I'm now in the year 667, playing as Rome with many soldiers, ships in almost every sea and a lot is going on. Might this be the reason?
The crashes are now so frequent that the game is unplayable, wich ofcourse is sad.
I think I've tried all your tips, but it doesn't help. I've also changed the game settings to the lowest resolution wich also doesn't help.
It's an excellent game and I really want to play it smoothly, Please help me....

One last Q: is the game supposed to have music? My doesnt...

Here's my DxDiag:

Thanks Andrew. I found a lot noculture armies both in asia and parthia, renamed them. Also found a lot of characters noculture names, renamed them also. Haven't had time to play the game. But there is still one big problem remaining; whenever I try to get info from a syrian province the game crashes. This also happens if I try to choose syria from the save game menu, then the game crashes instantly, just by clicking on a syrian province.

Any ideas?
