I have seen another thread on this but no replies. I have tried many ways to get past this but to no avail. Immediately after I begin loading, the screen with the 3 world leaders comes up, and the message "Initializing Sound" appears. That's when the long, hard winter of discontent which gamers call "Freezing" begins, and I wonder should I have chosen a different career, such as Brain-Surgery or, perhaps, investigating The Mating Habits of the Exceedingly Rare Blue-Toed Chimpanzees of Thailand for my degree in Anthropology. . . I am using Win. XP, with nothing unusual re. set-up. Great vid. card; plenty of Ram etc., etc. Plus, I have applied all the patches to date.
Please, please, someone help get me past this problem. My heartfelt thanks in advance.
..... (sometime later): Would you believe it - out of sheer curiosity I d/loaded the demo and, guess what - the same problem occurs. The Initializing Sound screen freezes. aaaarrgh. There should be someone who can solve this situation for me before I do something drastic - like, perhaps, tell my wife I adamantly refuse to wash the dishes this time... I plead with some nice techie to have mercy on me...

I have a similar issue everytime I load the game.

Have you tried hitting the windows key on your keyboard (in between ctrl and alt) and clicking on the HO2 blitz icon on your start bar?

Try renaming the avi folder to something else, like aviold. Sometimes the binkplayer program (the one that plays the video before you get to the screen that freezes) can mess things up. Give it a try anyway, simple enough, it might help.

Hi... I just have the HoI2 icon on desktop to start the game. I tried a. continually hitting the win. button and clicking on the start icon and b. holding down the win. button and starting and the same prob. occurs. Am I missing something?

Tried it... had already been told to re-name it avi_old and avi.old. None worked. I agree it must be the Bink player. Maybe I will re-install and try again..

Oh... HAPPY DAYS. I finally solved it. I used Help and Support to try the game under Win.98/ME settings and it worked. Don't ask me why it wouldn't work for my Win.XP but there ya go.... hope this helps some other frustrated gamer.

How odd. Still at least you can once again enjoy the awesomeness that is HoI.

Tanesis,

Yes... seems odd to me too but it works. Just to reassure any other gamer who has encountered the same problem - I also had d/loaded the demo, to see if it would work. It had also frozen at the Initializing Sound screen. After I found that changing the settings from XP to Win.98/ME worked on the full game, I tested it on the demo as well. Same success. So that proved to me that it was def. my XP settings which caused the freezing. In the Help and Support section (Program Compatability Wizard)), when it asked me which option should I choose to change to new settings, I browsed to the installed game and chose the startup icon (HoI2.exe). Voila.
Hope this helps some other poor frustrated would-be world-conquerer/nation-gnasher finally get to satisfy his blood lust...

I've got the same problem, but changing the compatibility mode didn't help, it just froze as usual.

It's odd, that's for sure. I had installed the game on my external hard drive and that's where it worked for me. It worked fine as I went thru' the tutorial but when I began a game it froze and an error message came up. I reinstalled it on my main drive and it works fine with the changed compatability. So I've deleted the external installation and am copying the main installation onto the external hard drive for a back-up, plus copying the whole folder onto a disk (even tho' I have the official game disk).
All I can say is: keep trying - even try other compatability settings. You just might get lucky. I hope it works for you.

O.K. Have you tried the tip in the manual: Go into the directory and rename the avi folder to avi_old. Initially I tried that but it didn't work for me. It says that doing that prevents the Bink player from playing the intro. movie and sends you straight into the main screen.

I have come across a similar but strange problem. I just reinstalled Arma and installed the 1.2 patch. After the patch was applied I made a copy of the game (copy/paste) so I could install WiF. Now the original install works fine but the copy hangs up on the 'Initializing Sound' just like the others. I have made 2 copies of the same install and both do the same thing. At first I thought it was the WiF install but the vanilla copy does it too.
