**Out of Char note: doing an MP AAR on journal entries into the diary of the prime minister of England. This will be the format I use through out and others in the group I play in are welcome to join but I will keep my postings as journal entries, feel free to comment, the group plays mostly Sundays and Wednesdays and I will endeavor to keep it going as best I can depending on how things play out, hopefully we will finish out the session. Once war breaks out more details will become available, this is the intial posting before the game starts. Human Nations: Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia,U.S.,UK. By the end of 1935 it was clear the world was going to change. Europe was embroiled in turmoil, conditions forced upon populations by the last world war had given way to Fascist states in Germany in Italy. It was clear to Baldwin that the British investment into the League of Nations was futile, that in the end old hatreds would be reborn, it was under this revelation that the United Kingdom forged ahead and began the long painful process of coming to grips with the new realities of the world, below are excerpts from the Journal of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Winter 1935- 19??.

12/15 - I knew that Blum had been having intense negotiations with his Russian counterpart. What was particularly troubling was the vague replies offered when asked directly as to what the discussions pertained to. There was a steady unease in France as if a mist was rising from the land at dawn to reveal the gates of hell were being opened. It was that extreme, the mood in talks with France were cordial but the underlying tone of dread was crippling. I knew that Germany was rebuilding and had begun a direct diolque with Italy that was clearly an effort to counter the French English alliance on the continent. Blum knew that should things progress negatively he would be faced with a hostile Italy and Germany, France would fall and it was under this premise that I knew he was seeking favor with Russia. Gauging the French position has been crucial for the securing of the Commonwealth, France has always been aloof and its time to define roles and positions. Blum has been coy but I sense he isn’t getting what he wants from Russia and in the end he will come to me hat in hand ready to follow my lead, we will see.
12/17 - Meetings with American diplomats have been cordial but low level at best. The Americans have their eyes solely on the pacific and Asian theatre, which I understand but doesnt serve my end. I have been pressing as hard as possible for the Americans to address the rise of fascism in Europe, to no avail. At best I have secured a mutual resource and technological trade. Europe has the potential to explode and my fear is that the Americans will sit this one out should it occur. If Italy and Germany come together Europe may no longer be here for the Americans to ponder their assistance to, I am becoming increasingly frustrated in my efforts but wont stop, in the end the Americans do the right thing, after they try everything else first.
12/18- I had lunch with an aide today, we discussed the current proclamation from Germany of their rebuilding of their economy and the implications to Versailles. It’s clear there is little we can do about it and privately have heard murmurs from the Italians that they support this new initiative and any political move made by the United Kingdom to publically admonish this rebuilding of the German economy would, be rebuffed in strong terms destabilizing Europe and rasing tensions, this was a test, one I cant afford to fail. I determined that the UK should remain aloof and not issue a statement either way, Hitler doesn’t seem to lack confidence and if he wanted to know what I thought he would ask. Needless to say our current policy on Germany is allow them to come to us, a highly doubtful probability but our best course at this time. Germany seems to have sown seeds in Rome for a unification of Fascism and is just waiting for the opportunity to flaunt its new found clout and defiance, Blum’s ineptitude in Paris may bring this about prematurely.
12/18- There isn’t much to say, reports from France are that troop movements along their borders have been curious. It would seem that Italy has other priorities then to defend its borders with France. Perhaps the war with Ethiopia isn’t going well, or a redeployment of forces into Africa is a prelude to more activity. Either way Italy remains a very sharp thorn in our African sides. The potential for disaster in Africa is very real, things are in disarray at best and in worst a shambles. The issue is where to place priorities, the Kingdom is vast and should war come before the end of the year the African situation would be critical, hard choices have to be made in Parliament, needless to say something will have to give, and I am confident that it will not be the Italians.
12/19- The Russian bombshell: Ideologically I couldn’t be more opposed to the regime in Moscow. So to my surprise the other day I received two communications from Russia, one was the standard salutation from low level diplomats. The other was an additional sealed letter delivered in person under heavy guard, Stalin himself wrote the letter. In all honestly I had a bit of a shiver run up my spine, Mr. Stalin’s reputation precedes him and upon receiving the letter I immediately moved to a private location. To say the contents were surprising would be an understatement, It would seem that many nations are active in the world of intelligence and most eyes are fixed on Europe. Yet regionally there has been little cause for alarm with the exception of the Japanese Chinese situation. Stalin was blunt and to the point and had offered to embark on a Middle East initiative for mutual security and benefit. My first instinct was to cringe, it looked like Stalin wanted to make a grab of nations and was gauging my reactions, and yet reading further revealed that Stalin has a grasp on some of the potential grim realities of what might lay ahead particularly in Asia and the Middle East. I quickly drafted a statement, which was accepted by Russia and put out to the world:
“It is with great pleasure that at this time the nations of Russia and the United Kingdom have entered into a joint Middle East treaty. Both our governments have concluded that it is in our mutual interests to come to an understanding with regards to this region of the world. It is with one voice that we speak and assure the world, and more specifically the nations of the Middle East that the security and stability of this region is now absolute and will be confidently and assuredly upheld. All nations with interests in this region have been consulted, and will continue to be in negotiations for any changes or adjustments to this joint Middle East security treaty.
In closing it is with great pride that we announce this effort and confirm the signing of this treaty. The nations of Russia and the United Kingdom assure the world that the Middle East region will be secure, stable, and at peace and any nation that looks to destabilize this treaty, or the region, will do so under the premise that in doing so an act of war has been committed against our two nations.”

Vague at best but sent a clear message to the other nations of the world that the United Kingdom and Russia were engaged in discussions about world situations. There has been an eerie silence so far, no one has remarked privately or publicly, my fear is that this initiative may have alienated my contacts in Washington as the American government is opposed to the Russian political system, for my part this was a diplomatic triumph and at minimum a bright spot in an otherwise bleak political climate.
12/23- Intelligence from the Chinese suggests that Japan is preparing a major offensive soon. Requests for Aid have been received and it seems the Americans are taking the point on this issue. There is very little the United Kingdom can do, a plan of issuing expeditionary forces to China was floated in lue of war but that has not been ratified. In short this remains the hot spot in the world, something will happen its only a question of when, I have meetings planned next week with the military to advise the best course of action. Washington seems content to react to Japan, this reactionary policy may result in a juggernaut in Asia, Russia seems to be observing as well, nothing from Tokyo but I suspect they are aware of the situation and are gambling that aggression in Europe will give them a free pass for aggression in China. I have a letter into Washington now to solidify their position on a potential Japanese offensive based on our contact with China, again the Americans are vague but I sense an underlying tone of urgency, as if Roosevelt wants a fight but cant pull himself or his nation out of the depression to get into one and win, the Americans have so much potential I fear their commitment to their pacific holdings may serve for disaster in Europe, and I am quite positive that nothing would please Rome and Berlin more then having Tokyo move now and draw an American commitment there, that could be a disaster, we shall see.
My dear Journal you are the only non-judgmental participant I have. No matter what the United Kingdom does someone else has an opposite view. Our time as an Empire maybe coming to an end soon, yet the realization for preparation for a coming storm has taken hold, I know what I must do and shortly dear journal the groundwork will be laid for the United Kingdom to move into the second half of the 20th century, for now I submit these thoughts to you, hold them close.
