Hello and welcome to the AAr about Songhai, the glorious 3PM located in West Africa. It features sand, grain, more sand, more grain, poor technology group and a lot of angry natives.

The main goal beside trying to stay alive and play the game till the end is to conquer Silesia, homeland of creator of this AAr. This of course involves either breaking through Austria and Bohemia or Polish horde. There is a lot of work to do.
Rules are as usual : Ironhand mode, normal AI, no cheating, no bug exploiting, no abandoning AAr, no jokes about Poland.

The first update should come tomorrow at the morning. The game runs slow which makes playing 50 years or so taking some time. There will be also index below if I survive past the first episode.

Cool. Interesting to see how Africa plays in EUIV. At least now you should have some chance to advance in technology even before westernisation.

No Poland jokes? That will not do!

Haha, anyway, cool choice. I will be following.

So here it is : Part 1 : Meet the Songhai.
49y23.png

This is our country, a pretender to throne of Earth. Few words about it : We are in Subsaharan group, which gives us : 100% more expensive technologies, -2 monarch points (each). We also start at level 1 techs, as opposed to European 3. Now about benefits : we are despotic monarchy, which is great advantage over tribes around us. This makes our realm very stable without all those incapable ruler modifiers or tribal succesion crisis.

Enough of introduction, time to move.
We have three missions to choose, but only one looks nice : achieve religious unity. Our capital is animist, and this is unacceptable. Fortunately, animists are very fast to convert (10 months). But our diplomats cannot be idle, let them fabricate claims on our neighbours while we convert.
49y41.png

Timbuktu is greatest city in this part of Africa. With 14 base tax, salt and as an important centre of trade it is vital that we conquer it. The other diplomat is fabricating claim on Gobir, our first target.
49yfi.png

Our economy is poor at the moment. We will be able to keep 6 regiments and still get some money, but we need to expand fast and hire advisors. Monarch points are most important resource therfore we must hope for good kings.
About the king ...
49ygv.png

Damn those Africa kings die quickly, I havent even made him a general. Well, this one looks medicore. Military points are not important ATM.
We've converted Gao and finished the mission (+25 diplomatic and administartion points). Sadly there is no new interesting mission, so we just move on to Gobir.
49yhZ.png

They country is divided and they keep all their army south, except for the 1000 men in north, they are overhelmed quickly and carpet siege starts.
49yjk.png

That was first war and probably the easiest war. Our claim on Timbuktu is finished and we need to strike at Mali before their strike. Let's make them our rivals.
49yjD.png

Making them rivals paid off, I've got a mission with a decent reward. Coring Timbuktu will be very costly so I appreciate every AP.
We start recruiting tons of infantry, this will seriously drain our money so we must move quicky.
49ylO.png

Guess I've picked the wrong time, as you can see their army is moving away, presumably towards rebels. Let's follow them, maybe we can pick them after they battle with rebels.
49ymU.png

Guess I was right. Maybe this war wont be as disastrous as I though?
49ysY.png

Now the chase begins. This will be a long trip.
49yvk.png

They are still alive, and I must take down that stack in Gao. We cannot let them capture our capital.
Now something about piety : Islam nations get events where they can choose if they want to get piety or lose piety, Piety ranges from -100% to 100%. 100% piety gives a huge bonus to land morale (1.0) and few other bonuses. -100% piety grants us 10% cheaper technologies and bonus to national tax. I decided to go towards technology bonus, since as I said : monarch points are most important.
Back to the front : stack in Gao is defeated. We detach siege in Timbuktu and chase their main army.
49yxL.png

Their peasants should keep them busy, we detach siege in Segu and Massina and wait.
49yyv.png

And this is where comes my another fault. By chasing the small stack in Wasuju their main army almost destroyed my detachment at Timbuktu. I say almost because I've managed to rescue them.
49yze.png

This is where they run . Natives will eat them for sure. Oh, and our king died, again. New one is 4/1/0. We are at -2 stability now, nasty.
49yAL.png

War is long but starts to look good. They still have army but we control Timbuktu, our war goal. Warscore start's rolling.
Hey, looks who's back.
49yBo.png

The natives must have beaten them hard. This is the part where I kill them.
49yBy.png

Yay, there we go. Now war is won, we just need to siege few provinces for warscore.
49yBI.png

And this is it We've gained great city, razed our major enemy to the ground (see the rebels?), gained some gold and unlocked a cool mission against our third neighbour, Kanem Bornu(also knows as Elephant Country.)

End of part 1.

Good start, subbed :)

Songhai's African, not Native American, though I've played Kanem Bornu before and I can say it's difficult once the Europeans arrive, though that was EU3, maybe it's changed.

I asked "is it as hard" :). I know Songhai is in Africa, I just asked if they are as difficult, have the same difficulty level.

Great stuff. Timbuktu is a the best city south of Cairo, so you grabbing it early is very good news.

Good start, subbed :)
Thanks, let's hope rest will be good too. :)

Very interesting choice. I will follow this AAR with interest. How hard is Songhai ? Is it as hard as playing a Native American ?
Thanks, I consider African countries very interesting to play even though Paradox doesn't care abut them.
About difficult : I'd say Songhai is much easier than Native americans. While you dont have access to some rare and expensive goods, the Europeans dont push you too hard unless you piss them off (this can be also a con, since if you get rly unlucky you may have no opportunity to westernize.), you have better tech group than americans and (as Songhai) your only issue is un-stable Mali.

Oh sorry I can't read, I would say it's easier then most Americans, Songhai is special because unlike other Africans it can have cavalry and isn't tribal.
Songhai doesn't have access to cavalry. It's tied to tech group, not to country. Subsaharan and New World techgroups dont have Cavalry.
Great stuff. Timbuktu is a the best city south of Cairo, so you grabbing it early is very good news.
Thanks. It's even better than Constantinopole, at least in terms of base tax. It was even easier in EU3, where Songhai stared with core on it.

Part 2 : Expand west... and east... and south.

Timbuktu is in our hands, now we need to core it and pray that no revolt happens. But standing idle is not an option. There is someone that must feel power of our war machine.
49yI6.png

There is no need to describe this war. Their army got annihilated easiely and all we have to do is wait for sieges to finish. Our diplomat shall fabricate claim on Massina (Mali) meanwhile.
49yJA.png

The increase in income is huge. We can now hire some advisors.
49yKp.png

There, the ADM advisor will have to wait for better times, maybe when we finish war with Kanem we will be able to get him a job.
49yKW.png

Our first vassal. I did a bit fail there : I expected the mission to conquer their province to fail so we could choose new one, instead it's still there so I had to cancel it. We need to wait 5 years for a new one.
http://puu.sh/49yIl.png/img]
What? I expected there will be at least 5 diffrent options. Paradox, you disappointed me.
While I dont approve wasting ADM points, we cannot stay at -3 stability. I've raised it to -1.
Now because peace is boring :
[img]http://puu.sh/49yLL.png
Yet another easy war. I cant wait for endless stacks of French being dropped on Gold Coast. But it's not time, not yet.
Because nothing amazng happens, let's take a look at trade :
49yMn.png

There are two trade areas important for us : Timbuktu and Ivory Coast. While the first one shouldn't be an issue when we annex Kanem Bornu (There are few provinces in North Africa belonging to Timbuktu but they wont do much harm) the second one may require huge navy. But it may be profitable : once Europeans gain foothold in South Africa and/or Asia, we may steal part of their trade, this will be fun.
49yNc.png

Two claims two provinces, isn't life easy?
Now with truces with our only neighbours (and no way to reach Benin) it's time for some peace. We should repair relations with Kanem Bornu.
49yNT.png

And reduce revolt risk. This is nasty, war exhaustion doesn't like me. (You can say that's it only 3%, but it's still a revolt chance and my manpower is not in good condition.)
49yOB.png

Mali's in bad shape, it would be dishonorable to not help them. Sadly they dont want to grant us access, but there is a way around it.
We move army into the war goal and dont push further, I dont want any more war exhaustion. The Mali army tries to sneak up on our capital, but they havent noticed one obstacle :
49yPg.png

Yea, natives are powerfull in this part of the world. Too powerfull, I guess.
49yPJ.png

Yet another province, Im moving closer and closer towards Mali's gold mines. With them I will be rich!
Mission to claim province of Hausa, -100% piety, revolt risk everywhere dropped to 0. It's getting better and better, but I still hate staying idle.
Claim on Hausa is ready, let's prepare claim on Mali while we visit our first guest.
49yR1.png

And another fast war. I've picked one extra province to don't let Benin do it (they DoW'd Hausa too). Sadly I cannot core it ... yet.
49yRp.png

It goes so slow without a diplomatic reputation advisor. I have one in advisor pool but I can't afford him (2 level -> 4 gold per month).
49yRQ.png

I dont post much stuff from in-between wars because nothing interesting happens there. Mostly it's just piety or no piety events, there's plenty of them. We still go towards -100% piety (Sorry Mansa Musa).
War ends and we gain not only Segu but tons of gold (134). This allows us to hire diplomatic reputation advisor, we can suffer a budget deficit for some time.
49yS0.png

I love these new notifications. The amout of times rebels crossed border and conquered my provinces in EU3 was too damn high. Anyway, it's end of part 2.Thanks for reading.

Some more good gains. It's still a bit confusing that you never get cavalry. Are there any circumstances when you can?

What? I expected there will be at least 5 diffrent options. Paradox, you disappointed me.

Been lurking since the beginning of your AAR. I'm now tempted to say something:

It's 1 possible answer for every Add-On released. ;) And of course one for vanilla. So there's.... one in total xD It's been a running gag for a long time now.

100% more expensive techs? -2 Monarch Points? YIKES. Good luck, you'll need it!
