Why the heck would my 100 loyal 200 relation son declare war on me, for fun?
It threw my country into civil war causing the puny yet strong Swedish to jump in.:(

Can you improve stability through any means other than events?

I'm guessing he got an event which gave him the "rebellious" trait and then he immediately declared war. Unless he already had the rebellious trait, in which case I think there is an event that makes you choose between losing prestige or declaring war on your liege.

No. But then, stability doesn't have much of an effect in this game. You can go for years at -3 stability without seeing any major consequences.

What is important in this game is reputation. Try to keep it better than tarnished. To keep reputation low you need piety. You get piety through events, crusades, donations in your budget to the Church and perhaps most importantly by creating new bishoprics.

I had an honorable reputation and my piety was 500.

As sjones25 said ... he was most likely rebellious and/or a rival. They can declare war by event no matter what their loyalty score is.
