I think he meant alternative game modes between time of peace and time of strife. When China is united the time would go faster and you'll macro-manage the empire broadly. ie developping the land, expanding the border, pacifying the frontier etc. but when a crisis happen and the empire is eventually broken up in pieces, you'd have to pick a side and micro manage the war.

Although i the rationale behind this idea is interesting it have some shortcomings, like in the dynasty cycle, when a crisis appear the dynasty in place almost never survive and one of the faction take over, how do you handle that ? Game over would kill the system and the ability to continue with the same dynasty for 1000+ years would be overkill.
Also how do you handle long period of division like the 6 dynasties era after the fall of Han (220 to 580). Although Jin dynasty was established it was an era of political chaos and strife until the advent of the Sui, then Tang dynasty.

And finaly how do you handle hostile take over from foreign tribes like the mongols or the Qing ?

Yup, that's exactly what I meant. And most of what you said would be a problem. Still, I'd like something that wasn't just EU4 or CK2 in China, and it seemed like a good way to capture the different character of the history.

You wouldn't have to play the same dynasty though. You could handle it where when there's a collapse, each player picks who they want to have the mandate of heaven, and plays that faction. Upon reunification, the game becomes "co-op" where all player are managing China and acting to either keep it going or trigger another collapse. Maybe you could have a mechanic where you tie better choice of faction, or more legitimacy for the chosen faction, to actions during the peace phase.

This is pretty cool but the concept art is kind of underwhelming tbh.

I am waiting to see if Koei can actually deliver something like those screenshots. Total War style battles, especially, looking at that siege screenshot.

They are already featured in Nobunaga's Ambition : Sphere of Influence

At 27 minutes you can see some combat here

(you only see big blocks from far away, but when you zoom in you see the soldiers)

edit : never mind its seems to be the console version, trying to find a video of the PC version, but searching among video in japanese isn't easy ^^

Ah yes, waring States: Over 500 years of constant warfare between over 150 states later reduced to 8 states over the period. It sure is super-dynamic compared to Europe and my favourite era due to how fast borders change and wars break out.

I recall in my Chinese history class that there are over 1000 recorded wars during this era. It would be really fun if it were ever made into a game.

I used to play Koei's games before knowing EU3. I prefer ancient China/Japan over Europe as a setting but Paradox games have vastly superior quality over Koei's.

This game engine could be well used to depict the dark ages of India (1192 AD -1556 AD) where there were hundreds of independent kingdoms constantly rising and falling, utter chaos and destruction with constant change in borders, lots of courtly intrigue, lots of bloodshed and warfare, until later on an empire finally forms up, annexes/vassalizes most of them, ends the chaos and finally brings back the peace, prosperity and tranquility.

Sigh, I can only wish. India had a similar history to China in many ways that Koei could've chanced upon (and bloody wars similar to Warring States or Sengoku), but sadly Indian history is often ignored. :(

Here's the PC version battles, much better :

Amazing! If this game and Shogun II Total War had a child, the result would be a perfect strategy game.
