Game Black screen then Crashes - 1.08, Windows 7 x64

Never had any issues before (well, not for a long time and they were very, very occasional) - though I mainly played CORE.

Date is September 1945 and I am getting crashes to desktop - faulting AodGame.exe - when playing as JAPAN. I can't get past a certain date unless I switch and play as another country. When going back to Japan, it doesnt take long before it crashes again - so I don't have a workaround!
Standard AoD 1.08 (SUBR) - not on Steam..

DirectX, Gfx card drivers, Mainboard BIOS and Windows patches are up to date..

It's also a pretty clean install..

Any thoughts?

Fresh 1.08 (SUBR) install on my laptop.
I am getting the same crash, a few game hours after loading the original savegame.

No indications of why it's crashing - though it was fine before now.
Played 1941 scenario FYI..

I have not seen similar crash reports of this timeframe which may suggest a strange setup in the 1942 scenario may cause this, maybe a surrender event?

Maybe..
The sound played before crash suggests it might be - though I dont have time to see any message boxes etc.

Not sure who or what would surrender though - in this particular case. Possibly USA DoW? They had not joined at this point.
