Catastrophy!

My EU game blinks. About once a second (uneven intervals) the screen blinks.

It does not happen during the start up. Not until I reach the main menu (where you choose TUTORIAL, SINGLE PLAYER etc). If I choose CREDITS it still blinks although that appears to be the BINK video that is running (also used during start up, the nice Cathedral window display, but during that I did not get any blinking).

It did not blink yesterday evening during play. After conclusion of that playing session I installed the new patch.

I am on XP.

well, I really should wait for castellon it his field...:D

have you tried renaming the avi folder to something else so that the bink player doesnt run?

have you got other programs active in windows at the moment?
I have had my game blink when icq, virus killer etc were active and trying to get my attention.

edit: posts split off to support from nov 19 patch thread. just so you know castellon.

And daniel a, you, as a forum vet, should know to post this in support...

Yeah, whenever this happens for me, it's usually because Mozilla popped up at one point saying download complete. After that, the game will just blink and you have to restart.

Since it has never occurred for me before and I got it after having installed a new patch (in which Johan made some strange technical changes, strange for me that is) I naturally assumed there was a high probability that it was the patch that was the reason. What would then be better: to post in the thread about the new patch (which is frequently visited) or post in the much less frequented tech support forum? For me the answer was easy, and you know KB, I did ask myself the question: where should I post it?

But if no one else experiences it then I was probably wrong, it had nothing to do with the patch.

Nope, I do not have Mozilla. And I downloaded around 1 a.m. Then turned off the computer and then started up EU in the morning.

I restarted my computer and now... no blink

Sorry I cried wolf and took up your time. :( Apparently it was just some kind of "combination of rare conditions" that happened to be true this morning. As so often happens in the "technical world". Bah

Now the only thing I can complain about is the reduction of inflation in the exceptional year event. Bah  ... ;)

I answer problems posted in this forum within 12 hours at the latest, usually answer them very soon. So that complaint just does not hold wieght.

As for your trouble, it is 98% caused by something you are running in the background.

I was giving Mozilla as an example. I meant that this happens to me usually whenever something pops up while I'm playing. Incidentally, this happens a lot less using the latest beta patch.

It was not a complaint. It was a state of fact. I'll try and explain. I believed this was a problem of frequence, i.e. the problem appeared under certain circumstances, such as the OS (as Bocaj already had tested the patch and hadn't seen the problem), hence I needed to reach many people. And since patches are important stuff (players are in the process of downloading them) I had to reach them fast. Hence the patch thread was best. That is the "fact" I referred to above and is entirely unrelated to how often you visit the Tech forum. It turned out I was wrong, there was no bug in the patch, and I have now learned that before I make such a post I should do the basic bug-correcting method of restarting the computer and if the problem then still exists I should choose the tech forum anyhow, regardless if I believe the community would be best off if I posted it elsewhere :)

Why are you MODS so stingy sometimes? From the above you can see that I never intended to critisize you and when I reread it and try to interpret it objectively I cannot see that I am critising anyone for anything, I merely say that one forum is more frequented than another. Now, please do not take this as critiscism, I know that is forbidden ;) , but rather as a hint how to improve, because that is how it is intended. We can all improve, as can be seen in the previous paragraph where I learned something. :)

Anyhow, good to know you visit this forum that regularly. :)

Of course, now I can read from your posts that you really didn't know to post such issue in the Tech support - I just asumed you had been around for so long to know that technical problems with the game such as this one was to be posted in either the support forum or bug forum. I also asumed that you as a veteran and frequent visitor to the bug forum knew that you should always double check your errors after a restart to see if the problem persist. I have yet again learned that I should be very careful with asumptions.:)

I've had this problem after changing to another window. EU2 really isn't designed for multitasking, and once you switch out of it and back it really upsets the game. It starts blinking and will occasionally CTD, but all can be corrected by restarting.

Thanks.

However, I have probably changed to another window a couple of thousand times and this has never happened before. But some sh-t it was. I'll remember your advice. :)
