After updating to Ubuntu 19.10, the game loads fine but freezes the entire desktop the moment I click any button, or rarely on the loading screen already.
I've tried removing the settings folder, removing the game and reinstalling, but as long as any save game remains in the settings folder, the game will freeze.

I've managed to play a short while on an entirely fresh install, but after saving and quitting, the same behaviour appears.

I've also tried downgrading to older video drivers, to no avail. I'm not sure how to get terminal output from a steam game, but I'll attach some log files that might be relevant.

Has this game ever run okay on this machine? Or never?

Do EU4 and Stellaris run okay on it?

I'm not sure how to get terminal output from a steam game,
Navigate to the Steam CK2 folder where the executable is then run it manually: ./ck2game .

It used to run fine on this machine using Ubuntu 18.04. After installing Ubuntu 19.10 it stopped working however (I just switched from one to the other recently). Stellaris and EU4 ran fine on 18.04 as well, on 19.10 I'm not sure about Stellaris, but EU4 loads fine, I can select countries to start new games as well. haven't tries much beyond that however.

I've found a ck2 executable in the steam folder, but it can't load libtbb.so.2 as it's 32 bits whereas the executable is 64 bits. Not sure which file steam loads

[edit] I tried using `export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/` but now it seems to have a glibcxx version mismatch. it's looking for a std::string symbol for version GLIBCXX_3.4.21 and not finding it

Both Steam and the game ought to be 64bit now.

GLIBCXX_3.4.21 maybe too old for 19.10 perhaps? Not sure. What does this output say:
strings /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6 | grep GLI

But frankly I'm getting out of my depth here!

I'm having what seems to be the same problem on Debian unstable. Deleting settings.txt (or deleting everything and reinstalling) allows me to run and play the game once successfully, but on subsequent launches clicking on anything at the main menu causes a "hang". This isn't actually a real hang: the music keeps playing, the Steam FPS counter keeps updating, and the animations in the background keep playing. However all keyboard and mouse input seem to be captured by the game making it impossible to alt-tab etc. This happens even if on the first launch I do nothing but select a language, dismiss the tutorial popup, and then exit.

The game ran fine the last time I played, about 6 months ago. EU4 runs fine, and I don't own Stellaris. All mods are disabled, and the launcher works fine; I've also tried -skiplauncher to no avail.

I have the same issue on ubuntu 19.10, and deleting settings.txt helped me get ck2 working. It's.... Having mixed results with stellaris as of posting.

EDIT: It doesn't seemed to have lasted. Deleting settings.txt no longer helps... As for launching the executible from the terminal, I can't actually find anything called ck2game.

I have the problem. Launching it through Proton seems to remove the issue. The performance isn't the same of course, and it seems dumb to play a linux supported title through an emulator, but it allows the game to be played.

Please try editing settings.txt to say
fullScreen=no
borderless=no

And set the resolution to be smaller than your Linux desktop of course.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to help. The game runs in a window as expected, but otherwise the problem is as before. Even running in a window, the "hang" leaves me unable to switch away from the game which is odd.

Ok, I managed to run ck2 from the commandline, apparently it needs to use the system glibc, but have access to the steam runtime for libtbb. The libtbb shipped with ck2 itself is 32 bits for some reason. using LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/:${HOME}/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ works, but I'm wondering if the game could be taking a library from the system that is incompatible somehow.

In any case, there is no extra output on the commandline that points to the error, and setting windowed and borderless in settings.txt does not work for me either (it hangs in the loading screen already)

I've having the same issue -- CK2 "hangs" at the main menu, disabling all input -- on Manjaro Linux. The problem first appeared after the CK2 patch that included the Monarch's Journey. I had not upgraded my OS at all between my last play and that patch.

Having same issue.

Sometimes it freese even on load screen - loading events and thats all.

I cannot minimize or kill prosses - GUI is totally freeze.

For me the temporal solution was to delete settings.txt file every time before I start the game.

So the problem in some graphics settings I suppose. Something has a conflict with a graphics driver I suppose.

But - I can't find what.

Tried to put some privileges to the settings.txt file - this thing does not helped at all.

By the way - EU IV freeze on load screen (loading flags - and that's all).

Other games (CS Source, GTA San Andreas through Proton) - works fine.

Machine: AMD Athlon 220GE with integrated video (Raven Ridge Radeon Vega).

Ubuntu 19.10 (but this problem I got before - from kubuntu 18.04 and pop!_os 19.10, only in pop!_os 19.04 everything worked fine.
I got update to 19.10 and that was a begining. Then I set up Kubuntu 18.04 but this one do not help. Then - ubuntu 19.10 nothing comes better.

Since I love that game - I tried different ubuntu-based OS's and drivers from PPA - nothing helped me.

Update: Found that Rise of the Tomb Raider starts, but when I load the save from main menu - it booting endlessly.

Update2: Rise of the Tomb Raider starts, after a loooong waiting for the first boot, it starts correctly.
CS Go - dont.
Stellaris (vanilla, without any dlc or mods) works ok.

Tried that. Thied to run game in a window.
Tried to run game w/o steam overlay. w/o Steam Rich Assess
Tried to make all visible settings to uncheck in main menu.

Nothing helps.

The only way is to delete settings.txt

And, as I can see - it's not like system freeze, no. It's like some driver or daemon, which is using USB or keyboard/mouse stops to respond.

System is working. Game is working. Keyboard and mouse - do not totally.

ah....
Sinse there is no answer for that - I'll answer for m situation.

All this freeses were from... xbox 360 usb wired controller.
Sinse I inplug this device - all began to work correctly.

EU4, CKII and even CS GO.

I dunno what causes it - steam controller setup, xbox driver in linux or something else, but - I got a solution.

For me, upgrading packages does not fix the issue. However, I have found another workaround.

It appears this issue is due to a bug in gnome 3.34, where the dialog box notifying of an unresponsive window causes gnome shell to freeze.
See for more information here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/1607
It is not a bug in ck2, it's just that loading assets causes this dialog box to pop up.

The workaround is to disable this dialog box, which you can do with an extension: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/2257/disable-force-quit-or-wait-button/

when this extension is loaded, I can play as normal without any further issues.
