Shut down ALL programs running in the background, including Anti-virus.
Rename the avi folder to avi.old. There is something in the Bink player that runs the opening movie that causes serious stability issues in every version of HOI.
The default location for this is-
C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Doomsday
If those don't help you will need to give more info on your system and specific problem.
