Game Crash at Loading

I have a new laptop and I decided to finally install HOI: DD to get back into it after finding Ironhead 5's awesome thread.

This new laptop with an ATI HD3650 graphics card has a native resolution of 1440x900. When I load up the fully patched game, it crashes every single time at the end of the initialization progress bar.

I was wondering if my Vista 64 bit OS and resolution are even supported in the first place? I have UAC off, I make a games folder on my C drive, I have the most recent video drivers, I have set my display to keep the aspect ratio for each application. I am really at a loss, this is a pretty fast system.

I tried installing it on a VM Ware image of XP and it worked with a lot of bugs typical with virtualizing an OS to run your games. So I am kind of out of ideas? Anyone have any ideas?

Being employed in the IT profession has left me extremely frustrated trying to figure out what exactly is crashing my game. I have tried so much crap, but Vista is kind of new for me, and Direct X and .NET being integrated into the OS makes it very difficult to tear it all down and start from scratch.

I finally loaded up a virtual machine with Server 2008 x64. This OS is very similar to Vista as far as driver requirements, but it has a reputation for needing a few tweaks to get a lot of games working.

But HOI: Arm doesn't care. It installed and started up without a problem. The fixed resolution is a travesty to humanity on a 1400x900 screen, and even the resolution tweak worked without a problem.

I still have no idea why it will not work on x64 Vista Business, but I suspect if I just reloaded the OS and installed HOI fairly early, everything would work. At least now I can wean myself into HOI III on a virtual machine.

Ah i hate to break it to you but more than likely HOI3 will not work on a virtual machine.

Why? Because the Virtual machine (i am assuming Virtual PC/Server here) does not install a proper video driver (it installs some generic one). This is not a problem for HOI2 as its video requirements are low....

I would look at your video driver as being the problem in Vista. Also make sure you turn off UAC and do not install the game in the c:\program files folder.

Also rename the AVI folder to AVIback... avoid the intro that causes so many problems on Vista machines.

And just so you know i run HOI2 Arma on my laptop with Vista x64 Business with SP1 with no problems... (and ah ATI x1100 video chip)

Well luckily it is working almost flawlessly in VM Ware with Server 2008. I know it was buggy as hell in a XP Pro environment, but other than an annoying overscan problem the VM Ware itself has with that image, the game works perfectly and runs quite quick. I believe that a few weeks ago, VM Ware released updated video drivers that had additional DX 9 support. Maybe that is why it works now.

Thanks for your suggestions, but I have tried everything you mentioned before as that is how I had always installed HOI but with no luck. I have tried multiple ATI drivers. The only thing I didn't do was try out an Omega version. One weird thing was that without me doing the resolution hack, the game would start up in full 1440 x 900 res. I tried switching that off to keep the aspect ratio in the ATI management program, but it kept doing the same thing.

Without a hack the game only runs at 1024x768. What is happening is that your video card and/or driver are stretching the image to match the monitor's resolution; unlike a CRT this causes some distortion of the image on an LCD display (especially horizontal since it's widescreen). This is sometimes controlled by the driver and other times it is in the hardware; some laptops have a function-key combination that turns it on/off.

Yeah I forced the card to keep the original aspect ratio and it would still do that with HOI. Command and Conquer Generals is 4:3 only game and I tested that, it stayed at 4:3. In compatibility mode, I told HOI to start in 640 x 480. Still the game was filling my entire screen.

So yeah, I am so you are correct that the problem lies somewhere in the video drivers not liking being run in anything but original resolution. It is just weird that even if I apply the hack for my monitors res, it still crashes. I am tempted to load the Omega drivers and see if that works. It bothers me not knowing what is breaking my game.

*Edit- Omega does not have 64 bit drivers. I guess I won't be playing this game without using VM Ware. Reloading my OS in the middle of school isn't going to happen.
