Game crashes at startup

I just put HOI2 Doomsday on a new computer. The opening scenes play, I get a very brief view of the startup screen, then it crashes (I get the 'Hearts of Iron has encountered a problem...' dialog box)

I am using HOI2 Doomsday unpatched.
I am running XP with SP3, build 2600.
I have a NVIDIA AWRDACPI with AMD Athlon 64 Processor 2GHz and 1Gb RAM
I have 62Gb free on my hard drive.
Video: ATI Radeon 9550 / X1050 Series with driver 6.14.0010.6844 and 256Mb video RAM
Sound: Realtek AC97 Audio with driver 5.10.0000.5650
I have DirectX 9.0c
I think that's everything you wanted.

Why are you playing the unpatched version?

You really need to use the 1.3a patch..

After you have applied the patch go into the Doomsday folder and rename the avi folder to anything (avi.old is what I use). This will skip the opening movie which causes crashes on a lot of systems.

I'm using the unpatched one because, like I said, I just put it on a new computer and was checking it worked before patching.
But I tried what you said and it still isn't working.
