Game crashes then does not start

This problem is the bane of my EUII existence!

This is a problem I seem to have a lot of as well. I tried changing to 16 bit as suggested elsewhere and renamed the "avi" folder to "AVI_back" as suggested here, but all to no avail. :wacko:

In the most current version of this problem, I was playing as China and as so often happens the game just froze up on me. After restarting the computer I can't even open the autosave, it just knocks me out of the program as soon as I try to load it.

Alternatively, when I try to start the oldautosave it freezes up while loading the scenario file.

I even downloaded the v1.9. Again to no avail.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated. :)

Are you playing vanilla EU2?

Have you tried Castellons standard advice?

1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

I've split you off into a separate thread as you do not have the same problem as in the other one - he couldn't start the game at all, whereas you can play then you crash and can't restart. Also the fix that worked in the other thread does not work for you.

As Gaute65 asks, the most important thing is have you installed any mods or done any editing? If not I'd have to say the problem is almost certainly in your PC, we're not aware of any problem in the game that hangs it (as distinct from a crash) and which corrupts all the same files.

Have you always had this problem since first installing EU2 on this machine, or only since what change or update?

Yes, I have indeed had this problem since I first purchased that game. I've downloaded the updates as they have become available in the hopes of finally ridding myself of this problem.

Can you post your specs? CPU, memory (RAM), video card, OS version, etc. The output of DXDIAG could be helpful too.

You could also try an reinstall. See sticky how to uninstall EU2.

Hello jdrou,

Sorry about the delay in responding. I haven't had time to visit in the past two weeks or so.

The CPU is a an AMD Sempron +2500, memory is somewhere between 500 and 600 Megs (?), video card is an Nvidia of some sort, OS is Win 2000. And if it's not already apparent that I'm not a techie, I have no idea what DXDIAG is.

I'll try to be more specific about this when I get home tonight and look all this stuff up.

to run dxdiag: click start->run. Type dxdiag and click ok. Run all tests and save the result. Copy the result in this thread.

So let me get this straight: starting a new game is fine? Loading a save or autosave not from a crashed game is OK? This has been happening ever since you first ran the game? You have no modifications installed?

If the answer to all those is Yes, let's first get your drivers up to date.

I don't think I've seen anyone running EU2 on a 2000 server version before. The server versions of 2000 do lack some things that the workstation version (2000 Professional) has; probably most significant is power management for laptops. Being a server OS it may have some processes running that you wouldn't normally find on a PC so those could be causing problems.
 
AndrewT, thanks for the driver links. Very appreciated. Jdrou, yes the OS is a rather odd selection I admit. A gift from a friend in IT. I use the machine entirely for gaming and as an internet box.

If I could get my CFO (i.e. fiancee) to approve the expenditure I would purchase XP or Vista. But she always seems to have more practical things, like a Kate Spade bag or our trip to the Caymans, to spend my paycheck on. :rolleyes:

I'll try your suggestions this afternoon when I get some free time.

Thanks for the advice. I updated driver's as you suggested, although the DirectX version is still 8.1 (looks like it loads each time, but the dxdiag still suggests otherwise) and restarted the computer. It actually runs much, much longer now without crashing. The game is much more enjoyable to say the least.

It still crashes periodically though. Each time one a January 1st.

Are you installing DirectX through Windows Update or a separate download and install? I find that sometimes the separate DirectX installer unpacks the files to the folder you specify but you need to go there and run the dxsetup manually (in 2000 Professional).
