As above, game always crashes to desktop randomly, using windows 7 64 bit and it always says the game has encountered an error and needs to close. i've tried running the exe file as an administrator but it doesn't work. Any help? Below is my dxdiag report.

That looks fine. What version and checksum do you see? They ought to be on the main game menu, but some folks can only see them by going to start an MP game as host.

Also please post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista/Win7 and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista/win7 to a non-system directory, like c:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis - Rome\, where [name] is your Vista/Win7 user name. You may have to search your C: drive for them.

okay, here's the settings file and the system log file. I can only see Rome v2.32c(IYID) at the bottom left of the main menu of the game. Is that the checksum?

So you have the game from Steam, as IYID is the right checksum from them. Sadly that all looks OK. Try running without sound, if that helps the problem is in your sound driver or a codec. Edit settings.txt to say master_volume=-1 (that's a minus one).

Also, let's check your temperatures. Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, Google for and install SPEEDFAN.

sometimes i get the "an unexpected error has occured", sometimes its runtime error saying the program has requested to be closed or something like that. any idea what's wrong?

have been playing w/o sound from the options menu as i prefer my winamp and my pc temps are constant throughout the game at 50 to sometimes 60 oddish degrees...
Nevertheless, try the change I suggested, that has a greater effect than just turning the volume down to 0.

Not really, I doubt it's a game problem per se. Have you patched up Windows, including .NET and Visual C++ ? May as well update DirectX 9.0c also http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en
