  • Hearts of Iron III Collection
I recently purchased Hearts of Iron Anthology. I installed the first Hearts of Iron and everything worked fine there. I then went on to install Hearts of Iron II. The tutorial works fine, however, when I click "Single Player" on the main menu the screen goes black and then a minute later a message pops up which says "Hearts of Iron II has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Here's my specs:

Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3
1024MB RAM
226 GB free space on my HDD
DirectX 9.0c
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz (2 CPUs)

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Welcome to the fourms. :)

Try renaming the avi folder. This contain the opening movie and the Bink Player used to play it. It causes problems with a lot of systems and should be the first step you take after installing any P'dox game.

Defult is

C:\ ...\Paradox Interactive\HOI2

You can rename it to anything you want, I like avi.old, but whatever. You could delete it but renaming it is much less permanent.

What GFX card are you using? Sound card? How old are your Sound and Video drivers? Sound drivers especially can cause odd black-screen crashes.

Start Menu => My Computer => Control Panel => System => Device Manager

Then double-click on the Video Controller and Sound Device lines to check which devices you have, and the driver dates can be checked on the next page of the same pop-up info box.

DXDiag from the start/run menu is more detailed....
