Hello,

I am trying to run AoD on my net book (win7 32bit) and the game crashes at the "initializing graphics" phase. I have tried making adjustments, such as launching the game at a different resolution, changing the desktop resolution and colour depth, running the application at a winXP compatibility mode etc

Things to note:
a) I tried launching the game as an administrator.
b) I have installed the game at a location outside the system path.
c) I have the same problem regardless of what version, vanilla or 1.08, I try to run.
d) This is the second game based on the EU2 engine that I have a problem running.
e) My video drivers seem to be up to date.

Could anyone provide advice on the matter?

A very good point.

Well, the processor is an Intel Atom Z520 1.33GHz, and the memory size is 2 GB.

According to the system requirements posted here http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=1119,

I should be able to launch the game.

That conclusion might be flawed. The atom architecture has a ~50% lower IPC, thus Minimum System Requirements would seem not to be met.

What exactly do you mean by a "net book"?

According to this web page: http://www.ehow.com/info_8497133_notebook-vs-netbook-vs-laptop.html
a "netbook" is not really a "computer" in the classical sense, but more of a tablet. The above web site suggests that what I would call "real computer games" will not run on one.

There might be netbooks that met the requirements of older games like AoD.

True, but play how well? I have been using an intel i7 chip and 8 gb ram playing AOD since it was released. I never saw any of the slow game play in later years of the war that many have mentioned and I often host a 3 player networked game with no problems as well.

I have a laptop pc with Intel i3 and 4 gb ram and played AOD for a month on that while away on vacation and never saw any slowness either.

A couple of months ago a comercial was shown on USA TV where a customer wanted to sell a "netbook" to the Las Vegas Pawn Stars shop and they told him that it was junk and was not worth enough cash to take a bus to Reno on. They said that if it were a "real computer" ....

I have a Nexus 7 Tablet with 2 GB RAM and I am certain that it will not play AOD either even though it has 1920 by whatever wide screen graphics.

Try renaming the avi folder avi_old.

My i7 8gb crashed with every load until I figured out that the useless Binkplay video was crashing my system.

The Binkplay only crashed my high-end system, not any of my older units. When I first bought the game, none of the AOD developers had a clue what the problem was. Old HOI2 played fine but not AOD. So after a few days of playing around with it I disabled the initial video which was where the crash came and it worked. I always eventually disabled initial videos in lots of other games too just to same load time, but here it was necessary.
