Just got the game. Launcher window pops up but when I click 'start ckii'. The window closes and nothing happens. I have tried manually reinstalling dx, c+ crap and .net, reinstalling the game (after deleting every folder from my pc), reinstalling steam and running it with all kinds of compatability settings like the resolution one suggested in the sticky. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

We've had some cases of the game not working with HDMI video connections. Can you borrow a standard VGA cable and try that?

Also please post, from MyDocuments/CK2 , settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

Swapping to DVI didn't make any difference. There is no settings.txt and error.log and setup.log are empty. System is the only log file which is not 0kb. Here are it's contents.

Are you running it in XP-compat mode in Win7? Don't do that, if so.

That aside, I'm puzzled here. Can you try manually running ck2.exe itself, without involving Steam? That is, exit the Steam client entirely and just run that file - we may get a clearer error message from Windows, and hopefully some more of those log files might get created. While we're at it, try right-clicking on that file and select it to run as Admin, and to disable desktop composition, and then try directly executing it again.

So running ck2.exe by itself changed nothing? No errors or anything?

Comparing your system.log with mine, the next thing that happens after "create text database" is

[graphicssettings.cpp:624]: Not using multisampling.
[graphics.cpp:151]: Creating device with: HARDWARE_VERTEXPROCESSING
Fullscreen=yes
RefreshRate=60
Resolution=1280x960
[graphicssettings.cpp:413]: Usable res: 1024 768 60
So your problem is clearly in the graphics area, but damned if I can see what. Now that you're using a VGA cable, what does this portion of a new dxdiag.txt look like now?

If nothing significant comes from the above, I'm afraid from here I will be taking some stabs in the dark. One such would be to uninstall the nVidia video driver, and reboot, which means you're using the default MS driver - see if the game runs then. After that (either way) you can install the latest nVidia driver again.

What nvidia video drivers are you talking about? To my knowledge the only nvidia drivers on my pc are my motherboard drivers and it doesn't have onboard video.

Also mrcee ive reinstalled something like 4 times now.

My apologies, I did mean your ATI video drivers!

So this is after uninstalling your video driver and rebooting to use the MS default driver? I guess that means it doesn't support the shader models required for the game. OK then, now reinstall the proper ATI video driver again *crosses fingers*

Well, thank you very much for your co-operation so far, but I'm pretty close to admitting defeat. There is clearly a video-related issue on your machine that's stopping the game from even accessing the video card properly, but what it is I can't imagine. You have a fairly standard video card that, if it didn't work with the game, I'm sure we'd have found that out by now.

Can you just confirm that you've uninstall all your Steam games and the Steam client itself, deleted all remnants, and then reinstalled everything? Because that did fix one or two of my toughest cases here, but I think you say in your OP you've tried that.

I don't suppose you have access to a different video card you could swap into your machine, even temporarily as a test? A different machine to play on?

I'm having the same exact problem, launching from the folder works, but the pre-game UI doesn't come up, and it therefore bypasses any mods I've installed.
Then it's not the same exact problem at all, as for the OP launching from the folder doesn't work either.

Yeah I did try reinstalling steam. I don't have any other cards or PCs to test it on.

This leaves me in a rather unfortunate position. Am to just abandon my money spent?
I agree, until you I've had pretty close to a 100% success rate here. Without being able to test on other cards or PCs I'm kind of stuck for any way to progress your issue ... here's one thought though, have you visited the Windows Update site and applied all suggested fixes? In particular I'm thinking of .NET, but anything really.

I run the game just fine in Windows XP under VMWare Fusion on a Mac, so here's a wild idea: install VMWare Workstation (free trial) and create a Virtual Machine PC in it, you'll need a copy of Windows (XP will do if you have some old copy lying around) and I'm sure the game will run OK in there.

Those ideas aside, yes, I'd see if you can get your money back from Steam. One thing I will do is post in the dev forum backstage and see if I can get either suggestions from the devs, or them to directly jump in here.
