Game crashes without launching (steam)

Windows is fully updated. The next thing I would normally try would be a hard drive wipe and fresh windows installation but unfortunately that's not really an option for me atm.

Steam are pretty tight pursed when it comes to refunds I'm afraid. Thanks for the help though. I appreciate it.

Have you tried running the game as Admin, running in XP compat, Running without steam directly from exe, running in windowed?

Give all of those a try, also reboot your machine. I realize these are all longshots but I think they're worth a try.

EDIT: Does your motherboard have an onboard GPU aswell? If so remove your GPU and try using the onboard one.

I see that most of them have, has he tried windowed though I skimmed the front page of the thread and didn't notice it being suggested.

I forgot to mention it but a couple days ago I did try copying someone else's settings.txt into both crusader kings folders with them set to windowed mode but it didn't do anything.
