got the same problem

I got the same problem... the game crashes after a couple of minutes back to the desktop - can't figure out what action causes this... looks pretty much like random... same does the editor when I try to open savegames most of the time... it is no problem to open the given scenarios... but modified he will not load after I changed the scenario properties

my system is a:

Athlon 1600xp+
ATI Radeon 8500
512 MB Ram
60GB Hd
Matsonic 8137c Board
with a VIA KT266 Chipset
Soundcard is the onboard ac97

I am running Win XP SP1

Any ideas?

Check to make sure you have all the latest sound and video drivers for your cards. What directX version are you running?

Also have you tried renaming the music file so no music plays in the game?

Or you could follow this method, to turn the music off.

I have the same problem. Instead of doing anything over-exotic, use the config program to turn the sound OFF. If it doesnt work (mine does not), open settings.cfg (located the same place as hoi.exe) using notepad.

Change "MUSIC_ON" to "MUSIC_OFF". Problem solved!

Now either play the game without music untill a patch comes around, or do, as others say, play the mp3 files in the background using another program. You will still have sound effects.

well... installation of HoI told me that I am running DirectX 8.2somewhat... and I got even newer drivers than you can download at ati...
I will try the music-thingie... but can't figure out why the editor crashes then?

Try renaming the AVI folder to AVIbackup

that didn't help... I just can tell you for the 1 game I am playing...
I set up an own scenario where I play Portugal and modified things a bit with the editor... and now the game crashes on April, 11th at 19.00h... and that every time

Maybe this might help you find something

Try playing with no mods, does the game still crash at the same point?
If it does not there is something wrong with your mod and you could try asking in the Editing forum.

things seem to have reasons with modifying game parameters with the editor... i followed your advice and played last night til 5 in the morning a regular game... and it didn't crash... ok, I will try my luck in the editor-forum...
thanks anyway

I'm still getting CTDs with 1.01, as well. They seem to be pretty random: I'll be clicking on units to see how a battle is going, or replacing a minister with a different one and CRASH! Right to desktop. Crashes aren't extremely frequent; but I would say that I get one every 90 minutes or so.

My system:

P4 1.6Ghz
768 MB RAM
Nvidia GF4 Ti4400
Soundblaster Live! Value
Intel 845 mainboard
Seagate 40 GB HD
DirectX 8.1
Windows XP Home SP1

My audio and video drivers are up-to-date, and I have all WinXP updates downloaded. Music is off. Autosave is on.

Things to try:
Rename your AVI file AVIback.
Manually save the game once an hour or so.

Seams wierd but I know, but these things helped me avoid crashes in EU2. May work for you with HOI.
