Recently I reinstalled Windows 10, but I moved to the IoT Enterprise edition which has less features. My system is a Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 4070 Super, 32GB Ram. I've disabled SMT in the bios, as it actually improves consistent frames in other games. I've been able to run Cyberpunk, Counter strike 2, No mans sky all at highest graphics settings at around 144fps 1080p. I can also run other paradox games just fine, except Vic 3.

It crashes when loading in after clicking 'start game' in new game, crashes after showing 1 frame of the game map when loading savegames. Tried with and without mods, tried reinstalling, tried limiting game to 60fps with no vsync on & lowest settings and that was stable. But ever since i tried increasing the graphics settings after testing that, it crashes, so i went back to lowest and *now* that also crashes. The error logs are totally random, sometimes it'll claim a province has a wrong id? Or an event is referencing something that doesent exist- or that a texture is not in multiples of 4px, or that the Pixel display buffer cant draw. Its pot luck whichever error appears in the log. The minidump.dmp files can be within 50mb - 108mb in size.

Yes, i have verified files in steam. multiple times

Any help?

Well, I don't think this or any of our games are tested on that Windows edition, so who knows if that is a contributing factor here. What features is it missing, anything in the video/graphics area?

You mention other PDX games, but the ones I see under your name here are much less demanding than this one. How about CK3, does that work (if you have it)?

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.
IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/pdx_settings.json .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/crashes/ folder, attach here the latest (only!) exceptions.txt

Thanks for responding, i dont think this version of windows has much related to game features, services, or vcredists or something because as mentioned earlier i can play any other AAA game i want at high quality, so i dont see how Vic 3 would be special in this regard

(I cleared the /logs/ folder before launching the game again. It crashed on the new game world map screen instantly.)

Exception file refers to the Nvidia GPU driver, while the error log contains a line that suggests the game can't access the Documents folder.
Try doing a clean reinstall of the Nvidia driver + purge the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria 3 folder. Ensure that the game can access that directory.

THANK YOU! A Nvidia clean driver install is what solved it. Thank you thank you it finally works at 60+fps too! :D

Follow-up. I can now play the game from about 30mins at a time to 3hrs. Random crashes of the same nature, however i have high graphics settings now on and 60fps+.

This latest crash actually turned my screen black, like it was restarting my gpu, then the it said something like 0x00042C Could not start crashreporter.exe.

Display Tab 3: There is a problem with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter device. For more information, search for 'graphics device driver error code 31
Probably your machine has an integrated Intel or AMD video device, that has no driver installed. This is probably unrelated to your crashing problem but definitely needs to be resolved!

Dxdiag shows three different unrelated crashes/hangs in victoria3.exe , which I'm afraid normally points to a problem outside the game. I see some crashes in other apps there too, would you say you are having problems on this machine outside this game?

If you have any overclocking active, try undoing that.

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 30 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

My ryzen 9800x3d does have an integrated GPU, but i think i have disabled it. Even though its disabled, does it still need a driver?
And no, not to my knowledge other apps have been crashing at all. Everything else does infact work fine.
At the minute i dont have time to record temps like you say, but from glancing at MSI Afterburner while playing, cpu hits around 50-60C and gpu just around mid 60'sC.

Well, dxdiag sees it so I don't think it is fully disabled! But this is getting out of my area of expertise.

Those temps sound okay, but let me know when you are more sure of them.

Any overclocking active? It might be worth unloading all the MSI utilities, or stop them from loading at boot time and reboot.

OK- I have installed drivers for the ryzen APU, now device manager no longer reports the code 31 display adapter error. Good. But the game has crashed on save... and my war was going so well XD

On my old machine, I gave up on an earlier 1.8.6 run as GB because the autosave/manual save crashes were getting way out of hand, this seems to keep happening around the 1900's mark. I'm really having a hard time just trying to enjoy this game at the minute. I hope PDX does some update to address late game stability...

Anyway here is the errors from the manual save crash. It happened when i manual saved as qing fighting off hordes of russians and germans after transferring the raj to me lol

[09:40:35][dlc.cpp:754]: Mod GDP Plotline Plus Minimized () version 1.6.* does not match game version 1.8.6.
Have these saves ever had mods used in them?

That aside, I don't see what is causing this to you. Are these crashes reproducible from the save files? Or you can play past the crash point when you reload that save?

Any .dmp files under the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3 folders ?

Yes, I use mods, but nothing that *should* warrant random crashes? Ive checked the workshop pages for each and theres no discussion of people having crashes like mine due to just the mods. I use-
1.8.6 Unofficial Hotfix Mod
Double Incorporation Speed
Less AI Trade Routes - CPU Performance
Hyper-Aggressive Pop Merging
Expanded Building Grid
GDP Plotline Plus Minimized
Improved Topbar Info
More Icons For Different Orders
(to be fair, the only mods i use are ones i think should just be added to basegame haha)

The crashes arent reproducible as such, they are totally random sometimes when the game autosaves or i do a manual save, and yes i turn off save to cloud. Infact, some of the crashes happen out of purely nowhere no matter what i do in the save, like scrolling the game map or looking through a menu while paused. Its so random. Sometimes it crashes after 5 mins, or 20.

the only .dmp files are the minidump.dmp included in each crash. They are 104MB big! Some are 105 or 106. This is from the last crash i dont remember what i was doing in it.

That is a shame, as no problem with mods involved can be escalated to Bug Reports, QA or the devs, so we can't get that .dmp file looked into I'm afraid.

Any chance you can try and duplicate this problem in a campaign which has never had any mods used in it?

I dont know. surely the mods cant be causing this. i dont want to start a new campaign just to have it start malfunctioning in the 1900s again. I dont want to waste any more time on this! such a let down, but thanks for trying to help anyway

I suppose there's no harm in asking.

@PDX_Sosanna any changes the above .dmp file can be looked into , to at least see if it is a mod or non-mod issue? Thanks!

@AndrewT The dumps don't contain any workable information in the main threads. Since the logs are full of mod-related errors, we can't assist much with it other than recommending to only run the game with 1.8.x version compatible mods.
