I am currently playing the 1.07 North American version of Europa Universalis 2.

When I load the game, no matter what resolution I have it on, it changes the res quite a few times before I get to the main screen. Then, once I try to start a scenario, any scenario, it tries to change the resolution some more, about 6 times, before it crashes to the desktop. I've only managed to get into a game once, as Byzantium. I was experiencing the same problem as now, only I realized I hadn't restarted after the install. Doing so allowed me to play that game as the Byzantines, but apparently it only worked once. It is now crashing again. Help?

Alright, looked at the threads and found the AVI_back suggestion for Windows XP users, but even though now I can get into the scenario, the game still manage to crash about three minutes in. It also seems to visibly refresh the screen every minute or so, by going black for half a sec.

Shut down all your TSRs, like messanger, the ATI control panel in the bottom right corner, things like that, then load the game, keep the AVI folder renamed.
