I have been getting this error for the last few days, causing my game to simply stop running:

######## EXCEPTION: 0xC0000005 at address: 0x01BA3219: ACCESS VIOLATION read attempt to address 0x00000B64
Version: Unknown Version
08/18/19 20:37:19

At least that is what is in my Exceptions log file.

If that's not the error that is causing the crash, where would I look?

The game is fine 95% of the time, but this crash has now happened three times in the last few days and I'd like to figure out why.

Thanks!

Are these crashes in one particular campaign? Or also in any new or other campaign you play?

Are they repeatable for a given save file? Or random?

It's just been the one campaign that I've been playing the last week or so. They started on August 16 and have happened four times according to the Exceptions log, but three times today.

Are they repeatable from a given save? That is, is there an event in the game or a game date, that the crash happens on reliably? If so our Bug Reports forum would be the best place for that save game file.

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

It's not repeatable. It just happens at random points. Usually, it doesn't happen again when I reload. The last two times, it did repeat and I just rebooted and it stopped.

Here are the logs you asked for.

Is there any way for me to watch for the error somewhere? I read through all these and other logs, and the only log that seemed to be showing a crash was the Exceptions log, as I pasted above.

Yes, all of my saves are used exclusively with my mod. I've been playing 867 start date games for weeks without any trouble. I just started playing in 1066, but even then I had made it a long time without a problem until today (and that one crash on the 16th).

So this just happened again.

Something is clearly off. I haven't changed anything today in either my mod or my system setup that I'm aware of.

Can we tell what the bug/crash error is?

The only thing I find in my logs that looks like a crash is:

######## EXCEPTION: 0xC0000005 at address: 0x01B23219: ACCESS VIOLATION read attempt to address 0x00000B64
Version: Unknown Version

Edit: I fixed my game to be fullscreen and do 60hz. I'm not sure how either of those changes were made. I'd like to be able to figure out whether this is a crash because of settings like that or something in the game files (like would be affected by a mod). I haven't changed anything in my mod since August 5, though, and the crashes didn't start until the 16th, and all buy one of them has been today. Anecdotally, at least two of them have occurred at the end of a month.

That exception tells us nothing about the root cause, I'm sorry.

While neither the game nor the mod changed recently, I'd speculate that the campaign has got to a set of circumstances where either a game or mod bug has come into play.

I can't really think of a way of diagnosing it further with this campaign. You could start a new test campaign with no mod involved and see if it has an issue like this I guess.

Are there other logs that might tell us what is going on?

There are a lot of log files. I'd think that one of them would say why the game is suddenly stopping.

Playing an entire campaign to try to get to the point where my mod might be causing a problem is probably not an option. :) It would take forever and wouldn't be any fun. I'm already 100 years into this campaign before anything even started to show up. It also isn't repeatable. So it can happen, I reload, and then I can go 5 or 10 years before it shows up again (and that's yesterday, when it happened every hour or two -- it had been even rarer).

It's probably my mod.

I ran an observe game from 1066 to 1125 without my mod and it didn't crash once.

I ran an observe game from 1066 to about 1100 with my mod and it did crash.

If the logs can't tell me what's going (I wish they could), I'll just peel one piece at a time away and see what I can find out.

I see, thanks for doing that test and for the feedback!

You might post your mod in the User Mods forum here and see if your fellow modders can see a problem in it.

All the best!
