I just purchased the game. I installed it twice now. I reinstalled DX 8.0 which came on the Cd, and it still doesnt run.

Here is what happens, I double click the icon. The Windows pointer w/ hourglass appears. After a few seconds it disappears. NOTHING HAPPENS!!!! I press Ctrl+alt+delete, and the only two programs I see open are "Explorer and Systray" (I closed all others before running the game). I have no idea what the problem is. I have a DVD/CD drive, is that the problem. I have HP, 450 Mhz, 128 MB Ram, Hitachi DVD Rom, and a RAGE Pro-Turbo Graphic Card. Please help me ASAP. I loved EU, and I do not want to have to return this game. If you have a patch please send it to me soon.

Go to Start/Programs and hit Configure. Try setting at the lowest resolution and with music set to off. Then try the game again. If it works increase the resolution and try again.
Also go to the sticky "Running Problems" in this forum and try altering the cache size for the CD ROM. It sounds like a copy protection problem with Strategy Firsts Safedisk.

This was posted by another user experiencing the same problem:

I had some problems today. I bought EU2 and it didnt start, and I found the problem to be binkplayer.exe which plays intro movies, maybe thats your case? If so, then alt-ctrl-del, and select binkplayer.exe ----> "end process" . Alternatively, rename "avi" folder to something else like avibackup.
Both ways worked for me

[/QUOTE

It's either that or the copy protection thing, or both (maybe that Safedisk thing interferes with binkplayer.

I just found another wierd thing. I have taken out the EU cd, and replaced it with Civ III (so I may actually play a game), and I clicked on the EU icon for no reason. THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENS AS BEFORe. It doesnt even alert me to the fact that the EU cd isnt present. The hourglass appears and disappears.

I do not know what the hell is wrong, I am guessing something is wrong with the actual EXE file since it seems to be unable to actually connect to the CD-Rom. When I start the game with the EU Cd in it, the CD rom light doesn't even blink.

Im coming to wits end, soon I will melt this cd down for all the wasted time and pain it has caused me.

Have you tried deleting that shortcut and making another?

There have been problems with DVD CD rom drives and the SF SafeDisk thing. Can you try it on a friend's machine which is different to yours, which is not a DVD? You may have to update your Bios or CD drive firmware.

man, ive tried everything. Running it from Windows Explorer, running it from my computer, running it off the cd, nothing works

when you post on SF forums, post the link to your problem description as well, otherwise, they probably will ask you the same thing we did all over again. By posting the link or pasting your problems and answers, you might get a faster response.

I turned off accelerration before and it didnt work. I did update my video driver a while ago, but not my sound driver. You think that is the problem?

Did you uninstall the game before reinstalling it? (see the sticky post on top of the forum).

I doubt it could be your sound card driver, might be something that doesn't work with binkplayer... Try it and let us know...

P.S. I forgot, try to run Direct X Diagnostic tools, run "dxdiag" and see if there are any problems (run all tests).
Also, windows 98 doesnt display all processes running. I found this program "advanced administrative tools" (similar to win2k's )
http://www.glocksoft.com/.down/aat4xx.zip
, it shows much more info under "Process Info", you can see all programs running. Look if you can see "EU2.exe" or anything new after you start EU2.exe, maybe that will give a hint what the problem is...

Unfortunately,it doesn't help to Digi:(
frustraiting...

It certainly is!
It is difficult enough at long range but this problem is not getting any nearer solving.

Didi:

I would suggest that you uninstall completely, take the game back and swap it for another copy. It could well be a bad CD.
Try it - there is nothing to lose.....
I also notice that in another thread you get a "excel" error.
we have had an explanation of this problem before and I post Patrics reply:-

This means that there is no text.csv in the config directory.

Dir structure must be:

EU root\
europa.exe

EU root\config\
text.csv

Is the game installing to the default directory or are you redirecting it?
