Hi,
I've installed the game about four or five days ago and it worked quite fine until about two days ago. What happens is that when I try to load a game or start a new one the screen get's blank and I get the normal windows error message (the send error report, cancel etc one). I have downloaded the latest patch from paradoxplaza but it still don't works, I have even reinstalled the game and it still don't works.

Please help me

Thanks in advance :)

Something happened between when you installed and when it stoped working, can you think of anything that changed with your sytem, auto update, new software a demo ...

Also I would need to know what the error message was please.

Well, the error message just says: EU 2 have made an error with another program and has to be shut down.
Send Error Report Cancel

That's about what it says.

------------------------------
Thanks for your help but I was able to fix it by reinstalling the patch and changing some options (setting the colour to 16 instead of 32). My old save don't ork but I started a new one and got a even better game going so, thanks anyway :)

I have the exact same problem. I was not playing EU2 for a long time, I found it on my laptop which was installed there ages ago (it is SF version). I played a few days and decided to look for a patch. I installed v1.09, and it worked all right. I played for some time and then quitted the game. When I tried to run the game next day everything was ok until I chose my country and pressed the start button. after that normally the "loading initializing etc" screen was supposed to come immediately. But this time I had a blank screen for a few seconds, and then the infamous "there is a problem. do you want windows to send an error report" box. whatever I tried, I could not get the game running after that. I uninstalled all and installed again but nothing worked. Even the v1.0 version did not run. Then, just out of curiosity, I installed the game(v1.0) on my other computer. It worked all right. Then over the network I copied the entire directory to my laptop, and it worked. Then I installed the 1.09 patch on my other computer, it worked. Then I copied the directory to my laptop, the same problem. Then I restarted my other computer which had v1.09 working, and the same problem occured.

It seems to me that patch v1.09 over SF version of EU2 works all right in the beginning, and after the first reboot it stops working.

Is there any workaround to this problem? I really want to play the game fully patched. at least until EUIII arrives to shops :)

If it was that simple there would be far more than two reports since SF is probably the largest publisher of EU2. Also, the original poster fixed the problem by changing Windows display settings (which is standard advice for Paradox games). Have you tried setting Windows desktop to 16-bit color? Renaming or deleting the EU2 avi folder (also standard advice)?

I was trying to say v1.09 over SF may cause a problem in some certain circumstance, not every time.

My screen setting is 16 bit by default, but I never tried the avi folder thing. I will try it tonight.

Are there any versions of directx which is recommended for not using?

Either 8.1 or 9.0 should work fine.

Make sure it's installed correctly though, with appropriate sound and video drivers.

That may be it too. I misclicked "install directx 8.0" after installing another game, and it installed directx 8.0. that may be why EU worked fine in the beginning, and did not after a reboot (i.e when directx 8.0 actually got working).

reinstalling directx, renaming the avi directory, and turning off my external SCSI CD writer (yes, it is very old indeed) worked miracles :)

I can understand the other things but what good may renaming the avi directory be since there is no avi playing when the game crashes? I mean after selecting the country and clicking start, before the "initializing scripts etc etc" screen.

just out of curiosity...

The AVI folder contains the intro movie, which is being played by a separate application, known as the bink player. On some systems, the bink player is a known cause of disrupting directx, causing the game to behave erraticly.

thank you all very much :)

what makes a game and a game company so successful is the community behind it. I mean the people who work for the company listen to the gamers (and talk to them) so closely, experienced gamers help the less experienced ones at will as if they are being paid for it, and everybody has a voice because everybody knows somebody is listening to them and commenting.

I have to learn swedish so I can start working for paradox some day, that is my only dream about an occupation. being a computer engineer is unfortunately not enough. Luckily, there are swedish language courses in the city I live in :)

Here's some useful swedish words:
hi = hej
yes = ja
no = nej
you = du/ni
me = mig
gave = gav
köttbullar = meatballs
computer = dator
fish = fisk
what the hell = VAFAN!
That's all = det var allt
I would like = jag skulle vilja ha

Try to make some swedish sentences with these words...
like: Jag skulle vilja ha köttbullar
vafan du gav mig fisk!!

I too am having this problem with 1.09. Whenever install the patch, I am unable to start a game (one you click start game, the 'infamous' error report message). I believe my publisher may be vision park though...At any rate, I'll try what is suggested here and see what happens.

Thanks

Renaming the avi folder worked for me. The game now is functioning normally. Thanks for the help!
