Summary

Game freeze on map zoom

Description

I previously (before 1.8) played a full campaign as Japan and the game ran fine.
Tried starting up a new game in 1.8.6 now and it is unplayable as it will frequently freeze and I have to force stop from Steam.

I'm on the same computer as before. Linux, 11th Gen Intel© Core™ i7-1165G7, TigerLake-LP Iris Xe, 64GB RAM.
Tried the "Low" default for graphics but no difference.

I started suspecting it was related to zooming the map so made the following test.
Starting the game in debug mode. It ran fine for a couple of months when I was not zooming the map at all. As soon as I started doing that I got an "Oh deer we got problems", it was showing slow FPS and when I continued a bit more zooming I got the freeze.

From the debug log:
[13:22:34][jomini_mapobject_manager.cpp:3153]: CMapObjectManager::GetVisibleObjects: invalid camera index 0 requested.

I tried zooming around in EU4 which I also have installed (1.37.5) and it still works fine.
OS & Mesa are up to date.

Steps to reproduce

1. Start a new game.
2. Move around and zoom in/out on map.

Hi! The team is aware of a problem with Harvest Condition shaders affecting some Linux/Mac configurations. A fix for it is scheduled for 1.9 release, possible workaround involves running the game in windowed mode.
Apologies for the inconvenience!

Updated to 1.9.1 and triggered the freeze right away by starting a new game and zoming/scrolling around before even unpausing.

I cannot see anything that looks like a fix for this in the 1.9 changelog so I'm hoping it has simply been pushed back to one of the 1.9.x updates.

If the issue is about regular zooming into the map, not just Harvest Conditions mapmode, then it's sadly a technical issue on the users end as regular scrolling and zooming doesn't cause any CTDs on our testing setups. I'll move the thread to Technical Support.

I didn't get what Harvest conditions referred to in your first post, no it is not related to that mapmode.

AndrewT thought it was clearly a bug: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/game-freeze-on-map-zoom-after-1-8-linux.1730274/

Now with 1.9.1 I get the following in the error log:
[13:54:02][gfx_vk_render_context.cpp:147]: Gfx error: pVKMasterContext->AccessVKDevice().waitForFences( (uint32)Fences.GetSize(), Fences.GetData(), VK_TRUE, UINT64_MAX ) returned: ErrorDeviceLost
[13:54:02][pdx_assert.cpp:628]: Assertion failed: pVKMasterContext->AccessVKDevice().waitForFences( (uint32)Fences.GetSize(), Fences.GetData(), VK_TRUE, UINT64_MAX ) returned:
ErrorDeviceLost
[13:54:02][gfx_vk_master_context.cpp:2350]: Gfx error: _Queue.submit( SubmitInfo, Fence ) returned: ErrorDeviceLost
[13:54:02][pdx_assert.cpp:628]: Assertion failed: _Queue.submit( SubmitInfo, Fence ) returned:
ErrorDeviceLost
It seems unlikely to be a problem with my system because:
  • It worked fine on the same computer before 1.8
  • Have not found any issues with any of my other games including the Paradox ones.

It's a crash of the Vulkan/GPU driver. I looked at the original report and it seems that you're using TigerLake-LP Iris Xe integrated graphics, which are on the very low end. I moved the thread back to Technical Support forum as sadly there is nothing we can do with it on QA side.

This user worked around it by using Proton

That aside, are you using the latest Mesa and proprietary Intel video drivers? Ubuntu all up to date?

Thanks AndrewT, I never thought of running it via proton but at least from a quick test it seems to be working to dodge the issue this way. Really appreciate your input.
Everything up to date and for Intel XE they publish the official driver as open source so propriety or not is not a thing there.
